Harrington Named Academic All-MAC; Four Others Earn Honorable Mention
May 02, 2012 | Gymnastics
The Mid-American Conference announced the Academic All-MAC Team on Wednesday (May 2) afternoon, with Bowling Green State University's Megan Harrington earning All-MAC status. Dawn Christman, Monica Eaton, Megan Valentini and Danielle Wishart were named Honorable Mention.
Harrington was one of four Falcons to advance to Regionals this past season (setting a school record), finishing 18th in the all-around, something she did all season. Harrington was the only Falcon to compete in the all-around in all 12 meets during the 2012 season.. The sophomore posted a career-best 38.750 at Missouri and added a 38.650 at the MAC Championships in DeKalb, Ill. On beam she scored a career-best 9.800 at Missouri and added a 9.775 on the same event at the MAC Championships, finishing fifth. The Bloomington, Ill., native also posted 9.775's three different times on floor versus Eastern Michigan, Maryland and West Virginia.
Christman has made a habit of earning academic awards, after being named Academic All-MAC in 2011 as well. The senior was one of the Falcons' top gymnasts in 2012 before suffering a foot injury late in the year. Despite the injury, Christman still managed to recorded a career-best 9.900 on the floor exercise versus Northern Illinois and added a 9.850 and 9.825 on the same event against Maryland and Central Michigan. Christman was also one of the top competitors on vault, scoring a season-best 9.850 at Western Michigan (won the event) and added a 9.825 and 9.775 (three times) versus NIU, Central Michigan, West Virginia and at the Kentucky Classic.
Eaton, a native of Kearney, Mo., was the top Falcon competitor on bars in 2012. The junior scored a season-best 9.825 at Missouri, finishing third. She recorded three individual crowns on bars in 2012, scoring a 9.800 each time versus Eastern Michigan, Ball State and West Virginia. Eaton also competed on beam for most of the season, recording a career-best 9.650 versus the Eagles and Central Michigan.
Valentini's top performance of the season was in a dual meet versus NIU in which she scored a 9.750 on beam and 9.775 on floor, earning MAC Specialist of the Week honors. The sophomore posted a career-best 9.825 on floor versus Central Michigan, capturing the win and added a 9.775 versus Western Michigan and West Virginia in the same event.
For the second straight year Wishart earned Honorable Mention by the conference office. Wishart, like Harrington, advanced to Regionals, but competed on vault alone, finishing 24th in the meet. The junior scored at least a 9.800 on vault seven different times (12 meets), including a career-best 9.900 at Ball State, the first Falcon to do so since 2005. She obviously won at Ball State, but also added wins (on vault) versus Central Michigan and Western Michigan. As dominate as she was all season on vault, she was even more impressive on floor at the MAC Championships, scoring a career-best 9.875, finishing third among 42 competitors.
