Regular-season schedule includes 10 matches – four under the lights – at Cochrane
Bowling Green State University interim women's soccer coach Kellie Evans has announced her team's fall schedule for 2012. The Falcons' 19-match regular-season slate includes 10 home matches, with four under the lights at Cochrane Field.
The 2012 season marks the first full campaign since the completion of the Cochrane Field lights project. All four of BGSU's Friday home matches will begin at 7:00 p.m., with each of the team's Sunday home dates kicking off at 1:00 p.m.
The home schedule includes five Mid-American Conference matches at Cochrane, including visits by four of the other five East Division opponents. BGSU will go on the road to face fellow East member Miami University as well as five of the six West Division schools.
Prior to beginning the MAC slate, the Brown and Orange will play eight non-conference matches, including five home games. Two of the season's first four matches will come against Big Ten Conference programs.
The regular season begins with a three-match homestand, including a night game against Michigan State in the opener on Friday, August 17. BG has played MSU more often than any other non-conference opponent, as the teams will be playing for the 16th-straight season – every year since the BGSU program was established in 1997. Additionally, the Falcons and Spartans also met in the NCAA Championships in 2005. This year's meeting at Cochrane will be BGSU's first regular-season competition of the 2012-13 academic year in any sport.
The Falcons then host Cleveland State (August 19) and IUPUI (August 26) on back-to-back Sundays before taking to the road for the first time. BGSU ends the month of August and begins September with matches in Minneapolis, Minn., taking on the Gophers (August 30) as well as Western Kentucky (Sept. 1). WKU and IUPUI are the only two first-time opponents on the 2012 BGSU schedule.
BGSU faces Valparaiso on the road (Sept. 9) before returning to Northwest Ohio for a season-long four-match homestand. The Falcons, after opening the 2011 campaign with a weekend trip to face Loyola (Ill.) and Illinois State, will welcome those foes to Cochrane in 2012. ISU, after winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Championships last season, heads to BGSU for a Sept. 14 contest, with Loyola coming to town two days later (Sept. 16) to wrap up the non-league schedule.
The MAC slate opens with home games vs. Ohio (Sept. 21) and Kent State (Sept. 23), before BG takes to the road for four-straight matches. The Falcons will travel to Eastern Michigan (Sept. 28) and Western Michigan (Sept. 30) before September ends, and will open October with trips to Northern Illinois (Oct. 5) and Toledo (Oct. 7). UT holds a narrow 8-7-4 lead in the series with BGSU, and each of the last seven meetings has seen the teams play to a draw or a one-goal decision.
Evans, assistant coach Bubby Leasure and Company will return home for intra-divisional matches vs. Buffalo (Oct. 12) and Akron (Oct. 14) at Cochrane Field. Last year, the Brown and Orange split with those teams, scoring a late winner to beat the Bulls on the road, but saw the Zips net a goal in the last 10 minutes in that road match.
BGSU returns to the road for matches against Ball State (Oct. 19) and Miami (Oct. 21), and the regular season comes to an end with a home match vs. Central Michigan on Thursday, Oct. 25. That game will begin at 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane.
The 2012 MAC Tournament will begin on Sunday, Oct. 28, with quarterfinal-round games at campus sites. The four survivors from that day's play will converge upon the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2, and the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 4. The MAC Tournament winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs.
