Falcons recognized for their APR score for seventh consecutive year
The NCAA is honoring more than 950 Division I sports teams – including the Bowling Green State University tennis program – for their high marks academically. The tennis Falcons have earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award, given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean earn this honor for the seventh consecutive season. The team has earned the award in every year since its inception. In fact, BGSU has had a perfect score of 1,000 in every year of the APR's existence.

The Association announced that 954 teams have earned Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. Through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team.
Full APR scores for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released June 20.
Top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on the number of perfect scores.
“These teams prove that it is possible to not only balance academic and athletic commitment, as most student-athletes do; but to exceed standards and post outstanding academic scores," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. “The drive and determination shown in the classroom and on the field by these men and women represent what it means to be an NCAA student-athlete.”
Five national champions from the 2010-11 season are included in this year's award list: Notre Dame women's soccer; UCLA women's golf; Brown women's rowing; Arizona State softball; and Ohio State men's volleyball.
A total of 263 schools, out of 347 Division I colleges and universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list. Additionally, eight schools that offer athletics in more than one division, out of 49 overall within the NCAA, placed Division I teams on the list.
Dartmouth had the most teams (23) recognized, followed by Brown (20) and Harvard (18).
In 2011, 909 teams were recognized.
In seven years of the NCAA's academic reform program, 2,946 different teams have received Public Recognition Awards, representing 46 percent of eligible teams during that time. Of that total, 209 teams - including the tennis Falcons - have received Public Recognition Awards each of the seven years of the program.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

On the court, the 2011-12 Falcons finished with an overall record of 10-10. BGSU went 4-4 in Mid-American Conference regular-season play, earning the fifth seed for the MAC Championships, and the Falcons advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament for the second consecutive spring.
The Falcons of Dean and assistant coach Cindy Yonker had just one senior on the 2011-12 squad. All seven student-athletes on the roster have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.38, with three of the seven maintaining a GPA of over 3.90.
Last month, all seven student-athletes earned academic all-conference recognition, as three were voted to the Academic All-MAC Team and the other four received honorable mention.
