Fowler & Ison will lead BGSU in 2012
Fowler and Ison were chosen as captains by a vote of team members.
"Becca and Jenny have garnered the respect of their teammates and have proven to be strong leaders for our team," said Evans. "Everyone is invested, on and off the field, and I know these two young ladies, along with the other upperclassmen, will continue to set a positive example for our younger players."
Fowler, a redshirt junior, has been a starter in each of her first two playing seasons after sitting out the 2009 season, her first year at BGSU, due to injury. A native of Grove City, Ohio (Central Crossing H.S.), she has played in 38 matches, making 28 starts, over her first two seasons. In 2010, Fowler started 15 matches at an outside defender spot. Last fall, she started each of the first 13 contests of the year, playing primarily at a defensive midfielder spot. Fowler played at least 80 minutes in four games last season.
Ison, a fifth-year senior, is a native of Kettering, Ohio (Archbishop Alter H.S.). After sitting out the 2008 season as a redshirt, she played in a total of seven matches over the next two seasons before blossoming in a starting role in 2011. Last fall saw Ison start 19 of the Falcons' 20 matches (missing the other match due to injury), and she had a goals-against average of 1.61 and an even 100 saves. She played over 1700 minutes in net and had three complete-match shutouts. Ison's save count was the eighth-highest single-season total in program history, and she was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in '11.
Evans and the Falcons will open the 2012 season on Friday night (Aug. 17), hosting Michigan State at Cochrane Field. BGSU is home against on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 19), facing Cleveland State. Friday's MSU match is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., while Sunday's game begins at 1:00 p.m.
