With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 6-3-0 overall. The Falcons drop to 1-8-0 on the season.
Erin Schwenke scored off of a Holly Harris assist to give the visitors the only goal they would need. The 'Cats outshot BGSU by an 18-7 count, including a 10-2 margin in the second period.
Mattie Liston made four saves to pick up the shutout for Ohio. BGSU freshman Jenna Underwood had five stops in net for the Falcons.
The Bowling Green area weather was dry all morning and afternoon, but it began to rain at approximately 6:20 p.m., as the teams were warming up for the match. By 6:45 or so, the precipitation had increased, but the rain then stopped just prior to kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
Just prior to the second half, however, the skies opened up, and the remainder of the match was played in a constant rain.
In the opening half, it briefly appeared that the Bobcats had scored on the first shot attempt of the match. With two-and-a-half minutes elapsed, Harris ran onto a pass from Cat Rogers and fired a shot just inside the far post. But, the assistant referee's flag was raised, indicating offside, and the match remained scoreless.
The Bobcats had the first three shot attempts of the match, all in the first 12-plus minutes, but BGSU then fired the next three shots of the night. First, junior Madeline Wideman found freshman Demy Whitaker with a diagonal ball. Whitaker headed down the center of the field toward the penalty area, cut back to give herself some space from two defenders, and fired a shot from distance.
Whitaker's shot, headed toward the lower right corner of the goal, forced Liston to make a diving save. The Ohio 'keeper deflected the ball out of bounds for a corner kick.
Several minutes later, Whitaker looked to return the favor, playing a right-side cross in the direction of Wideman. Wideman, in the penalty area, attempted to backheel the ball to a teammate, but was unable to make connections.
Just over a minute after that, however, junior Katelyn Tobin came up with a steal and found Wideman with a pass. The Troy, Mich., native quickly uncorked a shot, but Lliston was there to cover up.
Midway through the period, Ohio's Grace Campbell took a free kick from the BG side of midfield. The wet ball sailed into the penalty area, and glanced off of the head of a leaping Falcon defender. Underwood, though, was in perfect position to grab the ball and defuse what could have been a dangerous situation.
The teams combined for a total of six shots over the remainder of the half, but only one was on target, as Underwood stopped a Schwenke effort four minutes before the intermission. Schwenke, of course, would find the back of the net just after the start of the second half, for her first goal of the year.
For the remainder of the match, neither team put together very many grade-A scoring chances. The Falcons' only two shot attempts of the half were shots from Wideman and Tobin, only 83 seconds apart, in the early portion of the period. Both shots were saved by Liston, who earned her second-straight shutout and her fifth in the last six matches.
BGSU returns to Cochrane Field on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 23), hosting Kent State University in a 1:00 p.m. start.
