BGSU Women Win FAR Award For Third Time In Four Years
September 05, 2012 | General
Cleveland, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women have been named the winners of the 2011-12 Mid-American Conference Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Academic Achievement Awards. Bowling Green has won this award in three of the last four consecutive years. The FAR Awards are designed to recognize the conference institution with the overall highest grade point average (GPA) rank by gender.
“The MAC FAR Award is a terrific honor for our women,” BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “It is a testament to our student-athletes and their hard work in the classroom. Our coaches and academic staff also deserve credit as they recruit top-notch student-athletes. Like many things, this is a group effort and something everyone associated with BGSU can be proud of.”
The conference FAR's worked with the Athletic Academic Advisors to compute an award that best represents the academic achievement of student-athletes in a competitive setting. Using the same ranking method as the long-time Reese and Jacoby trophies (traditionally awarded to the best overall male and female athletic programs in the MAC), the FAR Awards are given to those institutions male and female programs with the highest overall GPA rank points within the conference. Only MAC sponsored sports are used.
Female student-athletes at Bowling Green had the highest GPA rank average in the MAC with a score of 9.15. The Falcon women carried the highest league GPA in one MAC sponsored sport (women's basketball) and ranked second in two MAC sponsored sports (softball and women's tennis) in 2011-12.
