Oxford, Ohio – Jordon Crawford and A'uston Calhoun scored 21 points each but the Bowling Green men's basketball team was unable to pick up a road conference win, losing to Miami Wednesday evening 63-60 at Millett Hall.
Both Crawford and Calhoun were 9-of-15 shooting and the Falcons shot a season-high 58 percent from the field. But Crawford, who knocked down a game-winning three-pointer just three days earlier against Eastern Michigan, saw his game-tying attempt rim out as time expired.
The Falcons led by as many as 10 points in the first half and held a 34-30 lead at halftime. Bowling Green continued to stay in front through much of the second half, taking a 55-49 lead with 8:55 remaining on an A'uston Calhoun lay-up. But the Falcons struggled the rest of the way, scoring just five more points.
In fact, Miami forced Bowling Green into turnovers on five of its next six possessions, allowing the RedHawks to tie the score at 55-55. Miami eventually went ahead on a Drew McGhee lay-up with 3:02 left, but Chauncey Orr answered with a baseline leaner to put the Falcons on top 60-59.
The RedHawks would take the lead for good on a Will Felder jumper with two minutes to play but the Falcons had chances. Crawford's jumper with 1:37 to play did not go down and the Falcons committed an offensive foul with 54 seconds left.
Miami went ahead 63-60 on a Quinten Rollins floater with 19 seconds left. After Bowling Green turned the ball over, Allen Roberts went to the line with six seconds left. He missed the front end of the 1-and-1 and the Falcons had one last chance. Crawford's contested three-pointer from the right wing hit the back iron and bounced out to allow the RedHawks to escape with the win.
With back-up point guard Jehvon Clarke out with a sprained ankle, Crawford played all 40 minutes against Miami's full-court pressure defense. Along with his 21 points, he added three assists, three rebounds and three steals. Orr ended with seven points, all in the second half, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Miami held a 24-21 rebounding edge and forced Bowling Green into 16 turnovers, two more than the RedHawks committed.
Bowling Green shot 64 percent in the first half and led by as many as 10 points in the opening period. The Falcons scored the first nine points of the game, but Miami answered with a 12-2 run to take the lead. BGSU answered back and took a 26-16 lead with six minutes to play in the opening session. The RedHawks chipped away at the lead and closed to within four by the break.
With his 21 points, Crawford ended the game just four shy of becoming the 41st player in program history with 1,000 for a career. Cam Black had two blocked shots to move into 10th place all-time at Bowling Green with 83 rejections.
Miami improves to 7-8 on the season and 2-1 in MAC play with the win. Bowling Green, now 6-10 overall and 1-2 in conference action, plays at Buffalo Saturday at 7 p.m.
