BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University swim team starts its final push toward Mid-American Conference Championships this weekend, competing in back-to-back dual meets against Akron and Youngstown State.
The Falcons meet Akron on Friday to complete their MAC schedule, turning around on Saturday to face Youngstown State. Earlier in the season, the Falcons faced Miami and Ball State back-to-back in the same weekend.
"It is not the easiest thing to do, but it teaches our athletes to get up and race every time, no matter the circumstances," said head coach Petra Martin. "We are also excited to switch some events for some people this weekend and race them in events they might not normally swim. We like to mix things up from time to time so the athletes experience more diversity in their racing."
The Falcons are 5-7 on the season and 0-4 against MAC opponents. The team is coming off a strong showing against Michigan State and Buffalo on Jan. 19, with BGSU outscoring both teams in eight of 14 swimming events. Earlier this week, the Falcons made CollegeSwimming.com's list of the Top 50 women's swim teams in the nation, with BGSU appearing at No. 47.
Bowling Green previously met both Akron and Youngstown at the Tom Stubbs Relays - a preseason meet hosted by the Falcons each year. In October, the Falcons won eight of 10 races to dominate the event.
The weekend's dual meets mark the end of the regular season for the Falcons, whose only remaining competition will come at the MAC Championships, Feb. 28-March 2, in Buffalo, N.Y.
Bowling Green and Akron square off at 3 p.m. Friday, with the Falcons turning around to meet Youngstown at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
