Falcons Zip Past Akron To Improve To 5-1

BGSU never trails in rout of visiting Zips
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University volleyball team rolled on Saturday night, defeating the University of Akron in three sets at the Stroh Center. The Falcons dominated all three sets, winning 25-19, 25-19, 25-16. With the win, the Falcons are now 8-9 overall and 5-1 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Orange and Brown hit just .179 during the first two sets, but the Falcons came out of halftime strong, hitting .452 in the final set. Senior Danielle Tonyan was the only Falcon in double digits, as she had 10 kills in the match. Seven other Bowling Green players had kills on the night.
A night after battling through five long sets to defeat Buffalo, the Falcons came out and handled business from the onset Saturday night. The Orange and Brown never trailed in the match, and it was tied just once in each of the first two sets.
After scoring the first point of the night on a kill by Kailtyn Skinner, UA would even up the match with a kill of their own. 1-1 would be the last time in the first set that the two teams were even tied, as the Falcons scored the next three to grab momentum. The Falcons led by as big of a margin as 10, at 19-9, and would win 25-19.
Bowling Green would win the second set by an identical score, as the only time that it was tied was 1-1. Tied 1-1 in the second set, Akron would commit four consecutive attacking errors. The Falcons would lead by as much as nine in the set, claiming a 25-19 win once again.
BGSU would never trail in the final set, as they scored the first four points and rolled from there. Tonyan was the star of the third set, as she had seven kills in just eight attempts (.875 hitting pct.) to lead the charge.
The Falcons will now step away from MAC play for a Tuesday night showdown at Oakland. Following that game with the Grizzlies, the Orange and Brown will return home next weekend for a pair of matchups against Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan.
