Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University gymnastics team, led by 2013 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Kerrie Turner, has released its schedule for 2014.
The Falcons will compete in a handful of non-conference meets as well as taking part in six conference meets. BGSU will host Eastern Michigan Jan. 25, Central Michigan Feb. 9 and Northern Illinois Feb. 23.
"We are preparing for the 2014 competitive schedule with excitement and anticipation," Turner said. "The team will be ready and we hope many fans will join with us to cheer us on and support us. The 2014 schedule is a true opportunity to compete at the highest level and I look forward to the challenges ahead."
BGSU will open the season Jan. 11 at Ohio State, along with Oregon State. The Falcons will also take part in the Chicago Style Invitational to compete against Boise State, North Carolina and Illinois State, while making non-conference trips to Maryland, Texas Women's University and UCLA.
"Beginning the season at Ohio State will be the test we need to make sure we are on task with our routines," Turner said. "It will also be our first time visiting the Chicago Style Invitational and we look forward to great competition. We will return to Maryland and Texas Women's University, a pair of places we have competed in the recent past. Then, we will spend the end of spring break competing at UCLA in an outstanding venue to prepare for our championship meet. It will be a highlight to compete against such a historic program with a rich history of NCAA Champions.
The Falcons open MAC competition Jan. 17 at Western Michigan as the first of three consecutive league meets. After hosting Eastern Michigan Jan. 25, BGSU will be at Ball State to close out the first month of 2014. BGSU will then host Central Michigan Feb. 9 and Northern Illinois Feb. 23 before closing the conference slate at Kent State March 6. The MAC Championships will take place March 22 at Eastern Michigan.
"The MAC continues to grow as a conference as our program is growing," Turner said. "We look forward to hosting three of our MAC rivals in Anderson Arena and bringing great crowds and an opportunity for our gymnasts to shine. I am so pleased that the MAC Championship is close to home at Eastern Michigan."
Along with Turner, the defending MAC Coach of the Year, Bowling Green returns a pair of MAC individual champions. Junior Jamilah Ali shared the league's vault title with a 9.875 at the MAC Championships and sophomore Alyssa Nocella won the balance beam with a 9.85. BGSU placed fifth at the MAC Championships in 2013 and went 3-3 in MAC competition during the regular season.
