Melvin and Rinker Both Shine In Final Round Of OBX Tournament

POWELLS POINT, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University men's golf team finished 10th at the ODU/OBX Tournament with a 54-hole score of 869 (299-289-281) on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 22). The Falcons saw improvement each day as the team saved their best for last. VCU won the tournament with an impressive 54-hole score of 843 (-9).
BGSU was led by senior Chris Melvin and freshman Brett Rinker. Rinker, who carded a final round 67 (-4), fell four strokes shy of the school record (63). His 54-hole total of 211 (71-73-67) was one of the best in BGSU history, and his best in his early Falcon career. For his efforts he finished tied for eighth among the 93-player field.
Meanwhile, Melvin, who improved in each round at the Kilmarlic Golf Course over the three days, carried his hot play into the final round and fired a new career-low 68 (-3). The score was five shots from the school record as his 54-hole card of 211 (73-70-68) tied his lowest total in his career. Melvin found himself in a tie for eighth with fellow classmate, Rinker, finishing the final two rounds under-par.
Junior Joe Cooper also saved his best for the final round. Cooper fired a final round 72 (+1), tying his career-low. For the tournament, Cooper saw his score drop by three shots in each of round. The steady play helped Cooper total a 54-hole card of 225 (78-75-72). The consistent play helped him finish tied for 60th in a field that featured 18 teams.
Fellow junior classmate Ryan Triller also competed for Bowling Green in the 54-hole event. Triller shot a final round of 76 (+5), carding a final total of 225 (77-72-76). The total tied him with Cooper in 60th place overall.
Freshman Jose Narro rounded out the five competitors that competed over the week for the Orange and Brown. Narro finished the tournament with consistent play, finishing the tournament with consecutive 74's. giving him a final total of 226 (78-74-74).
BGSU will be back in action next week, as they will travel to Lake Charles, LA to play in the Quail Valley Invitational. It will mark the final fall tournament for the Falcons.
