Falcons Picked to Finish Second in the East in 2013-14
October 29, 2013 | Women's Basketball
Rogers named to Preseason All-MAC Team
Additionally, BGSU senior Alexis Rogers was selected to the Preseason All-MAC Team.
Total votes were not released by the league office, but the Falcons of second-year head coach Jennifer Roos were picked to finish behind Akron, and ahead of – in order – Buffalo, Miami, Ohio and Kent State.
The Zips received nine votes to win the East Division, while the Falcons garnered the other three votes by the league coaches.
BGSU finished second in the East Division last fall, one game behind the Zips, breaking the Falcons' streak of eight consecutive divisional crowns. After winning the West Division title in 2004-05, the Falcons then won seven-straight East Division championships after being moved back to the East prior to the '05-06 academic year.
Rogers was an All-MAC Second-Team selection last season, and was named the Falcons' Power Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. She played in 34 of the team's 35 games last season, starting all 34, and was second on the Falcons in scoring, with 10.9 points per game.
Rogers led the Falcons in rebounding last winter, averaging 6.0 boards per contest, and she ranked 13th in the MAC in both scoring and rebounding. The West Chester, Ohio, native also led the team in steals (57, 1.7 per game) and field-goal percentage, and she shot 44.8% from the floor and 74.1% from the foul line.
Roos and her staff – assistant coaches Jesse Fleming, Jacey Brooks and Sahar Nusseibeh and director of operations Monique Rosati – have seven returning letterwinners, including three starters, from the 2012-13 team. That squad went 24-11 overall and 11-5 in MAC action, winning at least 20 games for the 10th consecutive year. The Brown and Orange advanced to national postseason play for the ninth consecutive March, winning a pair of games in the WNIT before falling in the third round to eventual tourney champion Drexel.
Central Michigan was picked to win the West Division in '13-14, followed by Ball State, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. CMU received all 12 first-place votes.
Nine of the 12 coaches picked CMU to capture the MAC Tournament crown in 2014, while BGSU, UA and Miami each received one vote.
Fans will get their first chance to see the Falcons in action on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2), when BGSU takes on Tiffin in an exhibition game at the Stroh Center. The game is the second half of a Falcon hoops doubleheader, with the BGSU men's team hosting Malone at 2:00 p.m. and the women's game starting at 4:30 p.m. Admission for the doubleheader is just $5.
The regular season begins on Nov. 8, when the Falcons face Michigan in the first round of the Iona Tipoff Tournament in New Rochelle, N.Y. After two games in that tourney (Nov. 8-9), the Brown and Orange will return home to prepare for the regular-season home opener, vs. Niagara on Nov. 15.
The MAC poll results and preseason all-conference team follow.
