PRESEASON PROSPECTUS
Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green men's basketball team will host Malone Saturday in the squad's exhibition game at 2 p.m. as the first contest of a doubleheader with the women's team (BGSU women host Tiffin at 4:30 p.m.). Tickets to Saturday's game are just $5 and are good for both basketball games.
Seventh-year head coach Louis Orr returns seven upperclassmen (two seniors and five juniors) from a team that went 13-19 a year ago and 7-9 in Mid-American Conference play. Although the Falcons have just two starters back (senior center Cameron Black and junior forward Chauncey Orr), Bowling Green has experience and depth for the 2013-14 season.
Black and Craig Sealey make up the senior class with Black starting 29 games a year ago. His 102 career blocked shots rank sixth in BGSU history and he shot 48 percent from the floor a year ago with 4.3 rebounds per game. Sealey will begin the season out of uniform due to injury but played in 29 games off the bench in 2013-14.
A strong junior class will be relied on this year, led by the team's top returning scorer in Orr. He started 31 games (all but Senior Night) and averaged 7.5 points while shooting 45 percent from the floor and 35 percent from three-point range. An 82-percent free-throw shooter, Orr had a career-high 18 points in a win over Kent State.
Richaun Holmes, in his second season as a Falcon, will look to improve upon his first campaign when he broke BGSU's single-season record with 73 blocked shots. He averaged 6.3 points off the bench, shooting 63 percent from the floor and grabbing 5.0 rebounds per game. He ranked 36th in the country in blocked shots a year ago, despite playing just 18.8 minutes per game.
Jehvon Clarke and Anthony Henderson are expected to take on larger roles in their junior seasons, likely starting at the guard positions. Clarke averaged just under 12 minutes per game, but had 30 assists and scored 3.4 points a year ago. Henderson started nine games in 2012-13 and had a career-best 13 points in his first career start at Central Michigan. Damarkeo Lyshe will assume a back-up point guard role who has played in eight games over the past two seasons.
Sophomores Josh Gomez and Spencer Parker are also anticipating larger roles. Gomez sat out the 2012-13 season after transferring from Iona. He played as a freshman on an NCAA Tournament team in 2011-12. Parker was hampered by injuries early in his freshman season but developed down the stretch and played in 15 contests, scoring a career-high nine points at IPFW.
Bowling Green has added three freshmen for 2013-14 in point guard JD Tisdale, shooting guard Zack Denny and forward Garrett Mayleben. Denny will miss the beginning of the season with injury, but Tisdale and Mayleben will add depth off the bench initially as they develop their roles.
