Falcons Head to Queen City for UC Invitational
October 31, 2013 | Women's Tennis
For the first time in over a month, the entire Bowling Green State University tennis team returns to competition. The destination again is Southwest Ohio, as the Falcons of head coach Penny Dean head to Cincinnati to compete in the UC Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Nov. 1-2).
Four total teams – BGSU, UC, Ball State and Xavier – will compete in the invitational. Play begins at 2:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Trabert-Tabelrt Tennis Center.
"We are looking forward to competing again after a long layoff," Dean said. "We are excited to compete against the two Cincinnati-area teams again, and it is especially exciting to see Ball State as we have not yet competed against them this fall."
The Falcons' last full-squad competition came on Sept. 28-29, when BG ventured to Oxford, Ohio, for the Miami Invitational. Three members of the Falcons – seniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland and sophomore Katie Brozovich – competed at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Oct. 10-12.
Those three BGSU players went a combined 6-4 at the regional, with each winning at least one singles match. Reuland and Chiricosta also competed in the doubles draw, splitting their two matches. The loss came against the tournament's top-seeded duo.
The Falcons and Xavier both participated in the Miami Invitational in late September, with BGSU going 4-3 against the Musketeers in singles play and 1-2 in doubles.
UC participated in the Falcons' own BGSU Invitational on Sept. 20-21. The Bearcats won three of the five singles flights and one of the three doubles crowns.
Chiricosta and Reuland are moving up the BGSU career wins lists. Chiricosta ranks second in school history in career singles wins, with 82. She trails only her sister, Christine Chiricosta (89 from 2008-11), on that list.
Nikki Chiricosta is fourth all-time in doubles wins, with 78, and her total of 160 combined career victories places her third on that BGSU chart.
Reuland now has 74 singles wins, the 12th-highest total in BG annals, and her total of 70 doubles wins deadlocks her for 14th on that school list. Overall, Reuland ranks eighth in BGSU history with 144 combined career victories.
Chiricosta leads the Falcons with 11 total wins this season, while Reuland and Brozovich have 10 and eight, respectively. Each of their four teammates, who have competed in two tourneys to that trio's three, have at least three victories so far this year.
Reuland paces the Falcons with six singles wins, while Brozovich and Chiricosta each have five.
Chiricosta leads BG with six doubles victories this year to date, while Reuland has four.
Following the UC Invitational, the Falcons will close the fall portion of the schedule with a trip to Kalamazoo, Mich., for the WMU Super Challenge, which will run from Nov. 8-10.
