Snelling Named To All-Time Southland Conference Cross Country Honor Roll
November 01, 2013 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Women's Track and Field
As part of its 50th Anniversary commemoration, the Southland Conference honored 65 student-athletes and eight coaches who were recognized for their historic contributions to the sport. Snelling was one of the eight coaches on the list.
"I appreciate the recognition," Snelling said. "My time in the Southland and at Stephen F. Austin is very meaningful for me. I was fortunate to work with great student-athletes, coaches and administrators. That experience has prepared me to rebuild Bowling Green to its former glory. I am excited about the direction we are headed and the positive steps forward this program will make this year."
At Stephen F. Austin, Snellin earned six Southland Coach of the Year Awards (men's in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and women's in 2003, 2009 and 2010). He led the Lumberjacks to conference crowns in men's cross country in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and to women's cross country championships in 2003 and 2010.
In his first season as Stephan F. Austin, Snelling led the women's team to the conference championship and the lowest team score in school history (42 points) and then guided the men's squad to a third-place finish at the NCAA regional meet. The finish was the school's best ever and their score was the lowest in team history for a regional meet. The 2005 men's and 2011 women's cross country squads held the school record for lowest point total at a conference championship (28 – men, 34 – women).
In 2004 and 2005, he guided Ashley Monteau to SFA's first-ever individual berths in the NCAA Championships and she was the only cross country runner in school history to qualify for the national championships on multiple occasions.
Snelling is in his third season at Bowling Green, building a foundation to restore the programs to a championship level of performance and to honor the teams' rich traditions and history.
