Falcons fall at Miami 179-111
OXFORD, Ohio - Oxford, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University swimming team won four events, two by freshman Victoria Griffin, but defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami was too strong for the Falcons Friday in a 179-111 victory.
"We raced with a lot of heart tonight and the intensity was definitely there," Head Coach Petra Martin said. "Miami swam a great meet and we are looking forward to racing them again at the MAC Championship."
Griffin won the 100 and 200 freestyle for the second consecutive meet, posting a season-best time of 51.38 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Her 200 freestyle time of 1:51.08 was just fast enough to edge teammate Joelle Scheps, who placed second in the event with a season-best time of 1:51.76. Hannah Newman was fourth as the Falcons racked up 15 points in the event, tying for the best single-event of the meet for the squad.
BGSU also earned 15 points in the 400 medley relay as the team of Maya Skorupski, Daniela Carrillo, Scheps and Brittany Szekely placed first in 3:54.10. Haley Roberts, Carmen Young, Jordan Bullock and Newman were second in 3:57.99.
The Falcons' other victory came in the 100 butterfly, where Scheps led the way in 57.06. Kayla Effinger placed third in 58.55 and Jessica Carpenter was fourth in 1:00.65.
Bowling Green piled up a number of second place finishes, including Emily Waller in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 5:10.10. She was followed by teammates Erica Nieminen, Alex Poitinger and Lara Klein in third, fourth and fifth place in the race.
Young swam strong times in the breaststroke, most notably placing second in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:25.66. She was just ahead of Carrillo in third at 2:25.78, with Stephanie Boyle and Kristin Filby following in fourth and fifth.
Although BGSU falls to 0-2 on the season, the Falcons will be right back in the pool Saturday, competing at Xavier at noon.
