Falcons Win 10 Events To Roll Past Xavier
November 02, 2013 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Cincinnati, Ohio – The Bowling Green swimming team won 10 events and set two pool records as the Falcons decimated Xavier Saturday afternoon 171-89.
BGSU's 400 freestyle relay team of Kayla Effinger, Erica Nieminen, Maya Skorupski and Victoria Griffin set a new pool record with a time of 3:33.61 and Griffin did the same in winning the 100 freestyle in 51.43 seconds. Griffin has not been beaten in the event in three dual meets this year.
Head coach Petra Martin had the opportunity to change up her lineup from the first two meets of the year and it paid dividends. She was also able to see how her team responded to back-to-back meets.
"We were able to experiment a little today and test our swimmers in different events, which is good for us to see for strategic purposes," Martin said. "This weekend was a valuable experience for us as we need to be ready to swim fast day-in and day-out no matter the conditions or how tired we are from the meet the day before. We had a great crowd of alumni and parents this weekend and we really appreciated the support."
Along with setting the pool record in the 100 freestyle, Griffin was part of the 200 medley relay team that placed first, along with Joelle Schepps, Daniela Carrillo and Effinger. Effinger won the two relays and also earned a victory in the 200 butterfly in 2:14.10. Carrillo earned a win in the 200 individual medley to go with her relay victory.
In all, BGSU had eight different student-athletes win eight individual races. Emily Waller won the 200 freestyle, while Kristin Filby earned the 100 breaststroke win. Carmen Young paced the field in the 200 breaststroke and Petra Laudova won the 500 freestyle. Hannah Newman posted a victory in the 100 butterfly.
The Falcons swept the top three spots in the 200 freestyle (after Waller, teammates Tara Capouch and Lara Klein were second and third) as well as the 100 freestyle (following Griffin was Waller and Skorupski), the 200 breaststroke (Scheps and and Nicole Hranchook finished after Young) and the 200 individual medley (Carrillo led Laudova and Young to the finish). The Falcons took the top four spots in the 100 butterfly (with Newman, Effinger, Haley Roberts and Anna Babinec placing in that order).
Bowling Green, now 1-2 on the season, will be back in action Friday at Oakland at 4 p.m. looking to reach .500 on the season in dual meets. Following that event, the Falcons will not compete in another dual meet until the middle of January.
