Madison, Wis. - The Bowling Green men's and women's cross country teams concluded the 2013 seasons Friday afternoon at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The women placed 17th out of 33 teams at the meet and the men finished 25th out of 31.
The women placed 17th at the regional meet for the second consecutive year, but did improve from 513 points a year ago to 491 in 2013. The Falcons' top five runners were separated by just 53 seconds, led by sophomore Andrea Alt
, who placed 65th with a time of 21:54. That was the team's top finisher since 2007.
Freshman Brittney Darah continued to make strides, running a season-best time of 22:20 in the 6,000-meter race, placing 91st overall. Rebecca Rae followed in 103rd with a time of 22:36 and Mackenzie McMillin
was 115th in 22:45, a new personal best. Amanda Garlak
was just two seconds and two places behind in 22:47.
"Individually, it was great to see Andrea move up almost 40 places from last year and be our highest individual finisher since 2007," Head Coach Lou Snelling
said. "Brittney Darah finished off a very good freshman year with yet another PR and a top-100 placing. We improved from a point-total basis from last year but fell short of our overall team-placing goals. This young team struggled with consistency all fall but that is a realistic barrier to overcome as we work towards achieving our lofty goals for next fall."
In the men's race, Jason Salyer
finished 51st overall with a time of 31:43 in the 10,000-meter race, equaling his career-best time in the distance. He placed seventh among all MAC runners at the meet. The team improved by three spots from a year ago, finishing in 25th with 675 points after placing 28th in 2012 with 899 points. The 224-point improvement marked the largest of any of the teams in the field.
The other four men's runners all set personal best times in the distance, with Greg Black
placing 97th with a time of 32:57. Tim Jurick
was 168th in 34:34 and Joe van Bolderen
placed 170th in 34:36. Jeremy Richard
followed in 189th place in 35:28.
"We are proud of the work put in towards seeing this program take steps in the right direction," assistant coach Eric Thatcher
said. "Success is not earned overnight in our sport and we look forward to continued development as we match the work ethic of our competition."
The race concludes a 2013 season that saw both programs make strides. The women's team finished in the top half at the MAC Championships for the first time since 2008 and Salyer was the men's program's first First Team All-Conference runner since 1995. Only Salyer and van Bolderen graduate from either team from those who raced at the regional.
