Bowling Green State University women's basketball coach Jennifer Roos has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Sarah Baer (Perrysburg, Ohio), Rachel Myers (Findlay, Ohio), Haley Puk (Waterloo, Iowa) and Lauren Webb (Vernon Hills, Ill.) will join the Falcon program for the 2014-15 academic year.
"Our staff has worked very hard for a long period of time to recruit top student-athletes to our program, and we are thrilled to welcome four top quality student-athletes to our basketball family," said Roos. "All four will be great representatives for Bowling Green State University on the court, in the classroom and in the community. They understand our high expectations at BGSU and are ready to step up and meet those expectations.
"I am already looking forward to having these four newcomers on campus this summer and to start working with them. Not only are they high achieving student-athletes, but they are high character individuals who will embrace our tradition and are eager to leave their own mark on our program."
Baer, a 6-1 center, is currently in her senior year at Perrysburg High School, under coach Todd Sims. She was an All-Ohio Second-Team selection as a junior, leading the Yellow Jackets to a 23-2 overall record and a 14-0 mark in the Northern Lakes League. PHS won sectional and district titles, advancing to the regional semifinals. Baer averaged 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and two blocked shots per game last season, and earned All-NLL, all-district, All-Wood County and All-Northwest Ohio honors. She averaged 8.7 points and nine boards per game as a sophomore, helping the Jackets to a 19-5 record and a trip to the regional semifinals. Baer also was a member of the 2012 PHS soccer team that won a state title, and she was the starting goalkeeper on the team in 2013.
"Simply stated, Sarah is a fantastic athlete, and she is a winner," said Roos. "She will be able to run the floor very well and is the type of player who is labeled as having a high motor. She will be committed to creating an up tempo pace for us to be successful. She can score well in transition and will be a strong presence for us inside the paint. Sarah also has strong family ties to BGSU."
Myers, a 5-7 guard, is in her senior year at Liberty-Benton H.S., under coach Nate Irwin. She averaged 15.7 points per game last season, leading the Eagles to a 20-6 record and Division III sectional and district titles and earning All-Ohio Second-Team honors. Liberty-Benton advanced to the regional semifinals a year ago. As a sophomore, Myers had 13.8 points per game as the Eagles went 23-3 and advanced to the state semifinals. She scored 12.8 ppg as a freshman, and has helped Liberty-Benton to an overall record of 62-12 in her first three seasons.
"We are very fortunate to keep Rachel close to home," said Roos. "She has proven to be a tremendous scorer throughout her high school career. She can score in a variety of ways and will be very effective in our ball screen offense. She has had great coaching mentors in high school at Liberty Benton and on the AAU circuit with the Dayton Hoopstars."
Puk, a 6-0 guard, attends Waterloo West H.S. under coach Dr. Anthony Pappas. She led West with 15.3 points per game last season, including a 44.7 percent success rate from three-point range, en route to earning Class 5A all-state third-team honors. A starter in each of her first three years for the Wahawks, Puk has captained the team in each of the last two years. She has helped the Wahawks to three consecutive state top-15 rankings and a Mississippi Valley Conference championship during her first three seasons. West went 16-7 and advanced to the regional finals last season.
"Haley understands what is needed for a team to be successful on and off the court," said Roos. "Not only is she an outstanding three-point shooter with great range, she has an extremely high basketball IQ and is dedicated to the game. The level of competition and quality of coaching she has received is immeasurable. Haley has worked extremely hard to prepare herself, and is more than ready for the collegiate game."
Webb, a 6-1 forward, attends Vernon Hills H.S. She helped coach Paul Brettner's team to a conference title last season, and guided the Cougars to a state runner-up finish in Class 3A for the second consecutive season. Webb averaged 13 points and 5.6 rebounds per game a year ago – playing the point-guard position as a junior – and has earned all-conference honors in each of the last two years. Entering her senior season, Webb already has career totals of 1,024 points and 502 rebounds.
"Lauren may be the most versatile of our signees," said Roos. "She has played every position at some point during her high school career. She has the ability to play with her back to the basket as well as being able to stretch defenses with her outside shot. Playing for a nationally recognized AAU team with the Illinois Elite, Lauren knows how to compete at a high level which will allow her to transition to the college game very easily."
The Falcons have 12 student-athletes, including four seniors – Jillian Halfhill, Alexis Rogers, Katrina Salinas and Jill Stein – on the 2013-14 roster. Salinas suffered an injury last week, and likely will miss the entire '13-14 season.
The Falcons are 2-0 in '13-14 to date. BGSU opens the home portion of the schedule with a Friday (Nov. 15) game vs. Niagara University. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
