Falcons Fly On First Day Of TYR Invitational

Evanston, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University swimming team got off to a strong start on the first day of the TYR Invitational, hosted by Northwestern University, Friday night. The Falcons won two events and finished just one point out of second place after the first of three days of the meet.
Bowling Green scored 195 team points and finished two points in front of Michigan State and one point behind Missouri State. Northwestern leads the meet with 288 points. The Falcons set season-bests in every event.
"We had a lot of swimmers advance to finals and they swam well," BGSU swimming coach Petra Martin said. "It's a tight meet right now and it will be interesting to watch over the next two days. I'm pleased with the way we are racing and working together as a team."
BGSU dominated the 50 freestyle with three of the top seven times. Brittany Szekely won the event in 23.32 seconds and teammate Victoria Griffin followed in third. Kayla Effinger was seventh as Bowling Green racked up big points in the event.
Bowling Green also won the first relay event of the day, the 200 freestyle relay. Griffin, Joëlle Scheps, Effinger and Szekely raced to a time of 1:33.42.
Daniela Carrillo posted a strong result in the 50 breaststroke, placing third overall, while Scheps ended fifth in the 200 individual medley. Jordan Bullock followed with an eighth place finish in the 200 IM.
To close the evening, the 400 medley relay team of Maya Skorupski, Carrillo, Scheps and Griffin placed third overall.
Bowling Green will return for day two of the meet Saturday with events beginning at 10 a.m.
