BGSU tennis coach earns honor from USTA/Northwest Ohio Tennis Association
"I am thrilled and honored to receive this award," said Dean. "Having lived in Northwest Ohio nearly all of my life, I have enjoyed being a part of the growth and success of the sport of tennis in this area."
The President's award, which was presented to Dean during the 2013 Northwest Ohio Annual Meeting last week (Nov. 25), is given to an individual based on outstanding service and dedication to the growth of tennis in Northwest Ohio.
Dean is in her 24th season as head coach of the Falcons, and her 28th overall year as a collegiate head coach. She was named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-13, after guiding the Brown and Orange to arguably the finest season in school history. BGSU went 17-5 to set a school single-season record for dual-match victories, and the Falcons posted the best MAC regular-season and tournament finishes in the history of the program.
The Falcons finished in a tie for second place in the league regular-season standings in '12-13. The regular-season finish, as well as the Falcons' number-two seed for the MAC Championships, represented program bests. In the league tournament, BG advanced to the championship match for the first time ever, before falling to Miami by a narrow 4-3 margin.
Dean's student-athletes have excelled in the classroom as well. In April, the tennis Falcons were recognized at the BGSU athletic department's annual Honors Night for having the highest grade-point average of any of BG's women's teams, with a stellar 3.74 GPA. The team earned that honor for the third-straight year.
Additionally, Maddy Eccleston, a senior on the 2012-13 team and a Toledo native (St. Ursula Academy), received the Falcon Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the department. The award is given to one male and one female student-athlete who embody the essence of the qualities BGSU Athletics holds important for all student-athletes -- scholarship, athletics, leadership and service. Eccleston was the second tennis student-athlete to receive the Falcon Medal of Honor in three years.
On a national level, the Falcons have earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award in each of the eight years since the honor was instituted. Dean's team has had a perfect score of 1,000 in every year of the Academic Progress Rate's existence.
Dean will enter the dual-match portion of the 2013-14 season with a record of 266-222 at BGSU and a career head-coaching mark of 312-266. She has guided the Falcons to double-digit win totals in 19 of her first 23 seasons, including in each of the last 11 years.
Prior to coming to BG, Dean spent four years (1985-88) as head coach at The University of Toledo, and her coaching background also includes stints with the Northwest Ohio Junior Wightman Cup and Midwest Federation Cup teams.
She also served as a tennis pro at the Toledo Racquet Club, and has worked with the Ethel Parker multicultural tennis program for inner-city youth in Toledo. Dean is a 14-time winner of the Toledo City Championships, having collected five singles titles and nine doubles crowns.
Dean is a native of Northwest Ohio, having attended Ottawa Hills High School in Toledo. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
Dean and the Falcons begin the dual-match portion of the schedule on Jan. 26, 2014, facing Youngstown State University at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
