BGSU duo earns all-league second-team honors
Bowling Green State University women's basketball standouts Alexis Rogers and Chrissy Steffen have been named to the All-Mid-American Conference Team. The All-MAC Team was announced by the league office on Friday afternoon (March 8).
Both Steffen, a senior, and Rogers, a redshirt junior, were named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Each player earns all-league honors for the second time in as many years. Rogers was selected to the All-MAC First Team last season, while Steffen is earning all-conference second-team accolades for the second-straight March.
Rogers, a native of West Chester, Ohio (Lakota West H.S.), is second on the Falcons in scoring, with 10.5 points per game, and leads BG in rebounding, with 6.0 boards per game. She ranks among the league's top-20 players in both categories.
Rogers also tops the Falcons in steals, ranking 10th in the MAC with 1.9 per game. She has hit double figures in scoring 14 times this season to date, and has posted three double-doubles. Rogers has hit nearly 74 percent of her free-throw attempts, and ranks 11th in the conference in free-throw percentage.
In MAC games only, Rogers averaged an even 10.0 ppg, and led the Falcons with 5.4 rpg. She shot 52.3% from the field in conference games, ranking sixth in the league.
Rogers, in just her second playing season at BGSU after transferring from Duke University, has totals of 675 points and 436 rebounds as a Falcon. She has averaged 11.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game since coming to BG.
Steffen, a native of Carmel, Ind. (Carmel H.S.), leads the Brown and Orange in scoring, with 11.7 ppg, and she also has 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.4 steals per contest. Steffen is tied for 10th in the league in scoring, and she leads the entire MAC in free-throw percentage, having gone 62-of-73 (84.9%) from the stripe this year to date.
Steffen paces the Falcons with 50 three-pointers made, and is ranked seventh in the MAC in three-pointers per game (1.7) and 10th in three-point FG percentage (34.5%).
In MAC action, Steffen led the Falcons with 11.0 points per contest, and she shot a MAC-best 90.2% (37-of-41) from the foul line. She was tied with Rogers for 15th in the league in steals per game in conference contests (1.6), and ranked eighth in three-pointers made and 14th in three-point percentage against league foes.
Steffen has scored a total of 1,193 points as a Falcon, and ranks 19th on the BGSU career scoring list. She is fourth in school history in three-point field goals made, with 176. She has played in 124 games at BG, and has started all 93 of the team's games over the last three seasons.
The All-MAC First Team consisted of Akron's Rachel Tecca, Central Michigan's Crystal Bradford, Miami's Courtney Osborn and the Toledo duo of Andola Dortch and Naama Shafir.
Rogers and Steffen were joined on the all-league second team by Nathalie Fontaine of Ball State, MU's Kirsten Olowinski and UT's Yolanda Richardson.
The third team was comprised of UA's Sina King and Hanna Luburgh, BSU's Brandy Woody, CMU's Jessica Green and UT's Inma Zanoguera.
Buffalo's Christa Baccas and Mackenzie Loesing, CMU's Brandie Baker and Jessica Schroll and Western Michigan's Marquisha Harris all earned All-MAC honorable mention.
The MAC's All-Freshman Team was announced on Friday as well, and consisted of Fontaine, Loesing, Eastern Michigan's Bianca Cage, Ohio's Kiyanna Black and WMU's Miracle Woods.
The MAC specialty awards will be announced on Tuesday (March 12).
The 2012-13 season marks the first time BGSU has not had a first-team All-MAC selection since 2004-05. That '04-05 campaign, like this year, saw the Falcons garner two all-league second-team selections. That Falcon team went on to win the first of three consecutive MAC Tournament titles and five in seven years.
The 2012-13 Falcons, 20-9 overall, finished the regular season with a MAC record of 11-5, good for second place in the East Division and the fifth seed for the MAC Tournament. BGSU will host 12th-seeded Kent State in tourney first-round action on Saturday (March 9), with tipoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center. Tickets for the game are just one dollar apiece, with students and Anderson Club season-ticket holders admitted free.
