EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University softball team (8-5) swept the first official day of the Evansville Tournament Saturday, defeating Southeast Missouri, 4-1, before shutting out Murray State by a score of 1-0.
Junior Kate Yoho led the Falcons offensively in game one, going 2-for-4 with two singles and two RBI. Sophomore Emily McClelland also contributed with a 1-for-3 game, recording her first-career RBI in the process. Sophomore Paris Imholz (5-1) picked up the win, allowing just one run and four hits in the complete game victory.
Southeast Missouri recorded its only run of the game early, crossing home plate one time on two hits in the bottom of the first inning.
The Falcons took it to the RedHawks in the top of the second, scoring four runs on five hits in the frame. With the bases loaded and no outs, McClelland fired a single down the left field line, bringing home pinch runner Courtney Cox. A hit batter and a walk brought in another Falcon run, before Yoho capped the scoring in the inning with a two-run single to left field.
Imholz allowed just two more hits in the final six innings, shutting down the SEMO bats to secure the 4-1 victory for the Falcons.
Bowling Green completed the sweep of the day with a 1-0 win over Murray State in game two. Yoho once again led the Falcons offensively, going 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Sophomore Jamie Kertes pitched magnificently for the first four innings, holding the Racers scoreless while striking out three. Imholz (6-1) picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out two in the final three innings of play.
The only run of the contest came in the bottom of the sixth frame, thanks to a solo home run from Yoho in the first at bat. Yoho's second home run of the season gave Bowling Green the victory, pushing the Falcons' current winning streak to three games, their longest of the season. The Falcons' last three-game winning streak came last April, when the Orange and Brown defeated Northern Illinois (4/27) before sweeping Western Michigan (4/29) in a doubleheader.
"It was great to get two today," said head coach Shannon Salsburg. "Our pitchers did a good job for us today, both provided us with solid starts and made big pitches when we needed them. We also had some clutch hits, none bigger than Yoho's in the sixth inning against Murray state."
