Softball Loses Two On Final Day Of Spring Break Stretch

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University softball team (8-7) lost two games in the final day of the Evansville Tournament, falling to Murray State, 6-4, and Southeast Missouri, 4-1.

Freshman Marisa Shook had the best game of her young career against Murray State in game one, going 2-for-2 with her first career home run and three RBI. Senior Hannah Fulk also had a solid game, hitting her first home run of the season in a 1-for-4 performance. Sophomore Paris Imholz started the contest, giving up three runs on five hits. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (3-3) was credited with the loss, allowing three runs on three hits in the final 2.0 innings of play.

The Falcons got on the board first, thanks to a solo home run from Fulk in the very first Bowling Green at bat of the day. Murray State responded with six-straight runs, including two in the top of the second and four in the top of the fifth.

Trailing, 6-1, heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons started a rally, scoring three runs on just one hit in the frame. Sophomore Shelby Fink started the inning with a walk, eventually moving over to second on a ground out in the following at bat. After a walk to junior Erika Stratton, Shook belted a three-run homer to cut the Racer lead to two.

Despite the rally, Bowling Green was unable to score again in the seventh frame, giving Murray State the 6-4 victory.

The Falcons didn't fare any better in the second contest of the day, losing to Southeast Missouri by a score of 4-1. Fulk collected one of Bowling Green's five hits in the game, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Kertes (3-4) started the game, giving up three earned runs and four hits in 1.0 inning of play. Imholz pitched 5.0 innings of relief, allowing one earned run and striking out two.

The RedHawks came out on fire in the bottom of the first, putting up three runs on four hits to jump out to the early 3-0 lead.

The Falcons answered with a run in the top of the fifth, coming on three hits in the frame. With Shook on first base, freshman Lexie Valone hit a sacrifice bunt, moving Shook to second on the play. Fulk singled to right field in the next at bat, bringing Shook home for the only Falcon run of the game.

SEMO added another run in the bottom of the fifth, securing the 4-1 win for the RedHawks and giving Bowling Green a 5-5 record on the week. The Falcons hit the field again on Saturday March, 16, facing off against the University of Dayton in a doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
