Bowling Green, Ohio – Competing in blustery conditions that included strong winds and precipitation, the Bowling Green and Toledo women's track and field teams battled to the wire Thursday. The Falcons, though, pulled out a 93-90 Senior Day victory in the first dual meet between the two rivals since 2000.
From 1987-2000, the two programs competed in a dual meet on a yearly basis (except for 1996) and the Falcons won nine of those 13 meetings. However, the two teams discontinued the annual event until picking it back up this year and the drama unfolded.
Because of the poor weather conditions, most competitors did not reach personal or season bests, but freshman Andrea Alt was one of the few exceptions. Running the 3000 steeplechase for the first time in her career, she exceeded the Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark by almost 10 seconds with a time of 10:55.98. Her time ranks fourth in the MAC this year.
Bowling Green showed its depth as the Falcons won eight individual events by eight different competitors. The Falcons also won both the 4x100 and the previously mentioned 4x400 relays.
In the 4x100, Kera Lamotte, Pettigrew, Sinclair and Weimer raced to a respectable time of 47.36 for the victory. Weimer added a victory in the 100 in 12.57 and Sinclair won the 400 hurdles in 1:06.51. Pettigrew blitzed the field in the 200 in 24.90 and Jasmine Redman won the 3000 by more than six seconds with a time of 10:27.01.
In field events, Krystin Reiser won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet-0.25 and Kayla Velasquez won the discus with a throw of 131-1. Shana Flanary posted a victory in the hammer throw with a toss of 161-10. Brooke Pleger, who ranks second in the country in the hammer throw, did not compete in the dual meet.
Bowling Green has two more weeks of the regular season to prepare for the MAC Championships. The Falcons will begin with split squad meets this weekend. Pleger and Pettigrew will compete in the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. while the rest of the squad will compete in the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
