BGSU Athletics Gives Back To Help Special Olympics
April 16, 2013 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio - BGSU student-athletes supported Northwest Ohio Special Olympics this weekend with two community service events. On Saturday, nearly 50 student-athletes hosted a volleyball clinic for Special Olympics athletes from surrounding counties in conjunction with Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). BGSU student-athletes and Special Olympic athletes came together for a day filled with laughter, fun, and fellowship as the group split into 12 teams to play friendly games of volleyball.
The following day, the entire student-athlete community came together for a philanthropy supporting the organization. For a $2 donation upon entry, student-athletes, coaches, and other friends of the Falcon Family came out to support SAAC's annual Talent Show. Talents ranged from singing, dancing, poetry, and more as student-athletes showed off their talents outside of competition and raised $700 for Special Olympics of Northwest Ohio.
“It is a fun event that student-athletes look forward to each year where we can have fun and give back at the same time," swimmer Emily Waller, the SAAC Vice President for Community Service, said.
“We really value our partnership with Special Olympics," Interim Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Services Casey Stark said. "Events like these allow our student-athletes to engage in community service and build positive relationships while participating in sport. Community service opportunities like these demonstrate our student-athletes' commitment to the motto '18 Sports, 1 Team.'”
Judges for this year's Talent Show were: Randy Barnes (Special Olympics Staff), Van Wright (Assistant to the Vice President for Enrollment Management at BGSU), and Nick Richey (Head Athletic Trainer for BGSU). Thank you for your enthusiasm, support, and commitment to our student-athletes.
