YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University softball team shut out Eastern Michigan Saturday afternoon, defeating the Eagles by a score of 4-0. The win pushes the Falcons' overall record to 22-17, including a record of 6-9 in the Mid-American Conference. The loss drops EMU to 12-28-1 overall, including a record of 2-11 in conference play.
Junior Katie Yoho had the biggest offensive impact, going 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Junior Erika Stratton also had a solid day, hitting her third double of the season in a 2-for-2 performance. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (9-10) earned the complete-game victory, giving up just four hits and striking out three in 7.0 innings.
Senior Hannah Fulk scored the first run of the contest in the third inning to give Bowling Green the 1-0 lead. Fulk reached first after being hit by a pitch, eventually moving to second on a ground out in the following at bat. Fulk then stole third base shortly after, advancing home on a throwing error by the Eastern Michigan catcher.
Bowling Green added to the lead in the top of the fifth, crossing home plate three times on one hit in the frame. Fulk and senior Paige Berger started the inning with back-to-back walks, setting the stage for Yoho to break the game open. With two on and no outs, Yoho hit her team-best seventh home run of the season. Yoho's shot to center field added three runs to the Falcon lead, giving Bowling Green the 4-0 advantage.
Kertes dominated the rest of the way, allowing just two hits in the remaining three innings to secure the conference win for the Falcons.
