Falcons Complete Series Sweep With 6-1 Win Over EMU

YPSILANTI, Mich.—The Bowling Green State University softball team completed the season sweep of Eastern Michigan Sunday afternoon, defeating the Eagles by a score of 6-1. The win pushes the Falcons' overall record to 23-17, with a Mid-American Conference record of 7-9. The loss drops Eastern Michigan to 12-29-1 overall, including a record of 2-12 in conference play.
Senior Hannah Fulk led Bowling Green with three hits, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Emily McClelland also recorded an extra-base hit, going 1-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Sophomore Paris Imholz (14-6) earned the victory, holding the Eagles to just two hits and zero earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched. Imholz also struck out five batters in the process, falling just two short of her season high. Fellow sophomore Jamie Kertes pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out one for her fifth save of 2013.
Eastern Michigan scored the first run of the contest thanks to a walk, an error and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second, giving the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
Bowling Green got its first runs of the game in the top of the third, crossing home plate twice on two hits in the frame. McClelland started the inning off with a shot down the right field line, reaching third base for her first career triple. Fulk then came to the plate and belted her fourth home run of the season to center field, giving Bowling Green the 2-1 advantage.
The Falcons struck again in the top of the sixth, scoring one run on two hits in the frame. With two outs and a runner on second base, senior Adrienne Dick sent a single to right field. An error in the EMU outfield allowed Dick to reach second, also allowing a third Falcon run to score on the play.
Bowling Green added insurance runs in the top of the seventh, crossing home plate three times on three hits to give the Falcons a 6-1 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, junior Erika Stratton sent a single into right field. Stratton's hit allowed Fulk to score from third, while an Eastern Michigan throwing error resulted in a second Falcon run to score on the play. A double steal capped the scoring in the frame, as junior Katie Yoho was able to steal home in an attempted pick-off attempt at second.
Kertes was able to hold the Eagles off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning, securing the 6-1 win for Bowling Green.
The Falcons return home on Tuesday, April 23 for a non-conference doubleheader with IPFW at Meserve Field. Game one is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
