Basalyga, Falcons Announce Fall 2013 Schedule
May 03, 2013 | Women's Soccer
Regular-season schedule includes eight matches – four under the lights – at Cochrane
The 2013 season will see all eight of the Falcons' home contests played on the weekend, with four Friday matches and four Sunday games. All four Friday tilts, with one exception, are scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m., with each of the team's Sunday home dates kicking off at 1:00 p.m.
The home slate includes four Mid-American Conference matches, including visits to Cochrane by arch-rival Toledo and 2012 MAC champion Miami. The MU match, BGSU's final home game of the regular season, will be the Falcons' lone contest against a MAC East Division foe at Cochrane Field in 2013.
Prior to beginning the MAC slate, the Brown and Orange will play six non-conference matches, including home games against Butler (August 30) and Evansville (Sept. 22). The regular season will begin with a match at Cleveland State on August 25, and after the Butler match, the Falcons will head to Indianapolis for a Sept. 8 game vs. IUPUI.
A three-match road swing will continue with two trips to Michigan, including a Sept. 13 match at Michigan State. BG has played MSU more often than any other non-conference opponent, as the teams will be playing for the 17th-straight season – every year since the BGSU program was established in 1997. Additionally, the Falcons and Spartans also met in the NCAA Championships in 2005.
The Falcons then play at Detroit on August 17, before hosting Evansville five days later to wrap up the non-conference slate.
BGSU begins MAC play with matches at Ohio (Sept. 27) and Kent State (Sept. 29), before commencing a season-long four-match homestand the following weekend. BGSU will open the home portion of the conference schedule by taking on Eastern Michigan (Oct. 4) and Western Michigan (Oct. 6), and the cross-divisional homestand concludes the next weekend, as Northern Illinois (Oct. 11) and UT (Oct. 13) come to town.
BG plays at Buffalo (Oct. 18) and Akron (Oct. 20) before Basalyga, assistant coach Rhonda Gottschalk and the Falcons face Ball State (Oct. 25) and Miami (Oct. 27) in the final home weekend of the regular season. The Falcons' regular-season schedule closes with two consecutive games vs. 2012 NCAA Championships participants, as BG faces Central Michigan in Mount Pleasant on Halloween (Oct. 31). The Chippewas, like the RedHawks, advanced to national postseason play last season.
The 2013 MAC Tournament will begin on Sunday, Nov. 3, with quarterfinal-round games at campus sites. The four survivors from that day's play will converge upon the site of the highest-remaining seed for the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 8, and the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 10. The MAC Tournament winner earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAAs.
Prior to beginning the 2013 regular season, the Falcons will play three exhibition matches, with night games vs. Wright State (August 13) and Case Western Reserve (August 22) sandwiched around a trip to Indiana State (August 17).
