BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team won both contests against the Akron Zips Friday afternoon, taking game one by a score of 3-0, before completing the sweep with a 2-0 shutout victory.
Junior outfielder Katie Yoho collected one of the Falcons' five hits in game one, going 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Junior catcher Erika Stratton also collected an extra-base hit, earning a double while going 1-for-2 at the plate. Sophomore Jamie Kertes (6-6) picked up the complete-game shutout victory, allowing just one hit and striking out six in the contest.
Both pitchers were sensational throughout the early part of the game, taking scoreless performances into the sixth inning. The Falcons finally broke the scoring drought in the bottom of the frame, scoring three runs on three hits to jump ahead of the Zips.
Senior Hannah Fulk started the scoring rally with a one-out double, eventually moving to third on a single from Paige Berger in the following at bat. An Akron wild pitch brought Fulk home for the first run of the game, followed by an RBI triple from Yoho for run number two. A groundout from senior Adrienne Dick brought home the final Falcon run of the contest, securing the 3-0 game one win for Bowling Green.
Yoho continued her offensive surge into game two, going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run. Sophomore Paris Imholz (11-4) also continued Bowling Green's excellent pitching, allowing just five hits and striking out six in the complete-game shutout win.
The only runs of the game came early, as Bowling Green took the 2-0 lead on two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Berger recorded her fourth double of the season to get on base, before Yoho blasted her fourth home run of the season to left field.
Imholz took control for the remainder of the game, shutting down the Akron bats to give Bowling Green the sweep and improve the Falcons' current winning streak to five games.
