VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Bowling Green State University softball team swept Valparaiso Tuesday evening, defeating the Crusaders by a score of 6-3 in game one and 5-0 in game two. The out-of-conference sweep improves the Falcons' overall record to 20-12.
Senior Paige Berger led the Falcons in game one with three hits, belting three singles with a run scored and an RBI. Junior Katie Yoho collected three RBI, thanks to a three-run homer in a 1-for-4 performance. Sophomore Paris Imholz (13-4) earned the victory, holding Valparaiso to just two earned runs and five hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Fellow sophomore Jamie Kertes pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief, allowing just one hit for her fourth save of the season.
Bowling Green scored the first runs of the day in the top of the third inning, crossing home plate three times on three hits in the frame. With two outs, senior Hannah Fulk prolonged the inning with a walk, eventually moving to second base on a single from Berger in the following at bat. With two on and two out, Yoho belted her team-leading fifth home run of the season to give the Falcons a 3-0 lead.
Bowling Green added to its lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two more runs on five hits to take the 5-0 lead. Fulk once again started the scoring rally for the Falcons, sending a double to left field in the first at bat of the frame. Berger followed up with a single through the middle, bringing Fulk home from second base. A fielder's choice and a pop out in foul territory would move a runner to second, allowing a single from junior Erika Stratton to bring home the final Falcon run of the inning.
Valparaiso started to storm back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits to cut the Bowling Green lead to 5-3. A bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh inning gave the Falcons an insurance run, however, pushing the Bowling Green lead to 6-3.
The Crusaders threatened in the bottom half of the final frame, loading the bases on one hit and two Falcon errors. With one out and three on, sophomore Chloe Giordano made a diving catch on a pop up to preserve the Bowling Green lead. In the final at bat of the game, Berger snagged a liner towards the right line for the third out, giving the Falcons a 6-3 game-one victory.
Bowling Green continued to cruise in game two, earning the 5-0 win for the sweep. Stratton led the Falcons with two hits, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI. Sophomore Emily McClelland also had a solid second game, going 1-for-2 with two RBI. Kertes (7-7) was credited with the win, striking out four Crusaders en route to a shutout win over the Crusaders.
The Falcons got on the board early in game two, scoring one run on two hits in the top of the first. Fulk led the game off with a double to right field, eventually moving to third on a double play later in the frame. Senior Adrienne Dick sent a single up the middle in the following at bat, bringing home Fulk for the first Falcon run of game two.
Bowling Green did its most damage in the top of the third inning, crossing home plate four times on four hits in the frame. With two outs and runners on second and third, Stratton came through with a big single down the right field side, bringing home two more BG runs. A double from freshman Marisa Shook and a walk to sophomore Chloe Giordano would load the bases, giving BG the chance to break the game wide open. McClelland sent another single down the right field side, bringing home another pair of Falcon runs to push the score to 5-0.
Valparaiso was unable to solve Kertes for the remainder of the contest, giving Bowling Green the game-two victory and the sweep.
