Falcons' Season Ends With 7-4 Loss To Toledo

AKRON, Ohio -- The Bowling Green State University softball team lost to the University of Toledo Thursday afternoon, falling to the Rockets by a score of 7-4 at Firestone Stadium in the third game of the MAC Tournament. The Falcons' loss marked their second of the double elimination postseason, ending Bowling Green's 2013 campaign. The Orange and Brown finish with a record of 1-2 in the MAC Tournament, and an overall record of 27-24 in 2013.
Sophomore Jamie Kertes started the contest, allowing two earned runs on two hits in the first 1.1 innings of play. Fellow sophomore Paris Imholz (16-9) picked up the loss after giving up three earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. Senior Hannah Fulk recorded a triple, single and a run scored in a 2-for-3 day. Senior Paige Berger also picked up two hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Juniors Katie Yoho and Erika Stratton each went 1-for-4 in the tilt, both collecting solo home runs.
Toledo opened the game on fire, scoring two runs on two hits in the top of the second, giving the Rockets an early 2-0 advantage.
Bowling Green finally broke through the Toledo defense in the bottom of the third, scoring one run on one hit in the frame to pull within one. With one out, Berger reached on a fielder's choice, bringing Yoho to the plate. Yoho surprised the Toledo infield, sending a bunt towards the pitching circle. Toledo's pitcher overthrew first base on the play, allowing Yoho to reach first and Berger to advance to third. Berger and Yoho attempted a double steal in the following at bat, bringing Berger home to put the score at 2-1 in favor of Toledo.
The Rockets responded with two more runs, crossing home plate one time in the top of the fourth and sixth frame, respectively, to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
The Falcons answered in the bottom of the sixth with their best offensive frame of the tournament, scoring two runs on two hits to put the score at 4-3 in favor of Toledo. Yoho started the offense with a bomb to left field, clearing the wall for her team-leading eighth home run of the season. Not to be outdone, Stratton belted her own solo home run to left field, bringing the Falcons back to within one.
Despite the comeback, Toledo iced the game with three runs scored on four hits in the top of the seventh to put the score at 7-3 in favor of the Rockets. The Falcons were only able to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh, giving Toledo the 7-4 win to end Bowling Green's 2013 season.
