Des Moines, Iowa – Bowling Green State University redshirt sophomore Brooke Pleger placed 11th at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the hammer throw Saturday, competing against the better hammer throwers in the country.
Pleger's throw of 208-feet-9 was the second furthest among the four collegians in the 16-person field and was less than three feet shy of qualifying for the finals.
Amanda Bingson, of the New York Athletic Club, set a new American Record to win the event with a distance of 248-5. The New York Athletic Club's Jeneva McCall was second with a throw of 242-9.
The top collegiate finisher was Arizona State's Chelsea Cassulo, who threw 223-11 to place sixth. Pleger was 11th, followed by Akron's Brittany Funk in 12th at 208-5. Southern Illinois' Deanna Price was right behind at 203-8.
The meet capped off a tremendous year for Pleger, who won the Mid-American Conference Championship in the hammer throw, breaking the MAC Championship record in the process. She was named the MAC Most Outstanding Field Athlete for the year, won the NCAA East Region preliminary round and finishes seventh at the NCAA National Championship, earning first team All-American status.
