BGSU Tennis Team Earns NCAA Public Recognition Award Yet Again
June 05, 2013 | Women's Tennis
Falcons recognized for their APR score for eighth consecutive year
The NCAA is honoring more than 950 Division I sports teams – including the Bowling Green State University tennis program – for their high marks academically. The tennis Falcons have earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award, given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rates.
The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean earn this honor for the eighth consecutive season. The team has captured the award in every year since its inception. In fact, BGSU has had a perfect score of 1,000 in every year of the APR's existence.

The Association announced that 976 teams have earned Public Recognition Awards, based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates. Through its innovative APR, which provides an annual scorecard of academic achievement, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I sports team.
Full APR scores for all teams, including access to postseason play and penalties for low-performing teams, will be released June 11.
Top performing APRs this year ranged from 978 to a perfect 1,000, with the majority of teams earning a perfect APR. The number of teams in some sports may exceed 10 percent depending on the number of perfect scores.
“The NCAA's quintessential student-athlete exhibits dedication and commitment both on the playing field and in the classroom," said NCAA President Mark Emmert. “These teams and programs truly embody the overall values of the NCAA, and have exceeded standards to post fantastic academic scores. We are delighted by such a clear example of our membership's commitment to providing well-rounded experiences to student-athletes.”
A total of 268 schools, out of 346 Division I colleges and universities, placed at least one team on the top APR list. Dartmouth had the most teams (25) recognized, followed by Brown (20) and Bucknell (19).
Bowling Green is one of only 62 schools at the Division I level, including one of only two Mid-American Conference institutions, to have received public recognition awards in each of the eight years of the program. BGSU's women's golf team also received public recognition today.
In 2012, 954 teams were recognized.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years.

On the court, the 2012-13 Falcons recorded arguably the most successful season in program history. BGSU had an overall record of 17-5, setting a school record for wins. BGSU finished with a 5-3 MAC slate, tying for second in the league's final regular-season standings, and the Falcons earned the number-two seed for the MAC Championships.
In the league tourney, the Brown and Orange advanced to the championship match for the first time in program history, before dropping a narrow 4-3 decision to Miami. In addition to BGSU's overall win total, both the Falcons' regular-season and league tourney finishes were program bests.
All eight student-athletes on the 2012-13 roster maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.33, with four of the eight maintaining a GPA of 3.88 or higher.
Last month, all six eligible student-athletes (freshmen are not eligible) earned academic all-conference recognition, as three were voted to the Academic All-MAC Team and three more received honorable mention.
