Huling Named Assistant Baseball Coach

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—Bowling Green State University baseball coach Danny Schmitz has announced that Mike Huling has been hired as an assistant coach. Huling served on the 2013 MAC Championship staff as a volunteer assistant.
"We are really excited to announce that Mike Huling has been promoted from volunteer assistant to the second assistant position," head coach Danny Schmitz stated. "He did a great job for us last year coaching the outfielders and first base, while also assisting with the hitters."
Last season with the Falcons, Huling assisted in the day-to-day operations of the program, working primarily with the outfielders, while assisting with the hitters. Huling's outfielders proved to be an integral part of the run to the MAC Tournament championship and NCAA Louisville Regional.
This season, Huling is expected to continue working with the outfielders. Huling will also be responsible for base running this season, while continuing to assist with the hitting. In addition, he will assist the program in the day-to-day operations, including scouting, travel, recruiting, conditioning and camps.
"I would like to thank Coach Schmitz and Bowling Green State University for this opportunity," said Huling. "I couldn't ask for a better coaching staff and University to work for. The camaraderie within a coaching staff is very important when it comes to winning, and I believe we have that. We have a great group of players returning for the 2013-2014 season, and I look forward to hitting the ground running."
Prior to coming to Bowling Green, Huling coached for one season at Mishawaka High School as the varsity assistant coach. He also coached the 16U Michiana Scrappers for two seasons.
Huling graduated in 2011 from University of Southern Indiana, where he played for two seasons. The 2010 team at USI won the NCAA Division II National Championship. In his two seasons, Huling batted .342. In 2010, the year USI claimed the National Championship, Huling led the team with a .387 batting average with 49 RBI. Prior to his time at USI, Huling also played at Glen Oaks Community College, where he batted .374.
"I think continuity and chemistry is very important," said Schmitz. "To have somebody that has been in the program for a year and knows what Falcon baseball is about, that is definitely going to be huge for our team. And, I'm sure the outfielders will be extremely excited to have Mike back, because like I said, he did a tremendous job with those guys."
Huling will begin his duties immediately.
