Falcons Finish In Top 15 In Spirit Cup
September 10, 2013 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University Athletics Department finished 15th in the country in the annual College Colors Day Spirit Cup, finishing ahead of BCS schools such as South Carolina, Notre Dame, Texas, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Nebraska and LSU.
Fans across the country were asked to go to the College Colors Day Facebook page and pledge their support for their favorite school. Each fan could vote one time per day and BGSU's fans pushed the Falcons to the top of the Mid-American Conference standings, as well as being the top vote getter among schools from outside of the BCS Automatic Qualifying conferences. No other MAC school ranked among the top 65 in the country and Bowling Green was also the top vote-getter among all Colleges and Universities from the state of Ohio.
"We have always known BGSU fans are the greatest and once again, they showed the nation that the Falcons are proud and passionate about their institution," Associate Athletics Director Mary Ellen Gillespie said. "It goes without saying that we are thrilled to have bragging rights in the MAC again and among the non-BCS schools. To be in the top 15 in the nation and finish ahead of institutions with strong national brands like Notre Dame and Tennessee is a true testament to the strength of Falcon nation."
Bowling Green's fans and Athletic Department have always been among the most loyal social media users. The official Twitter account of BGSU Athletics, @BGAthletics, has more than 8,000 followers which ranks second in the MAC. BGSU's official athletics Facebook page is closing in on 5,000 likes and the Falcons are also very active on YouTube, generating more than 400,000 video views in the past year.
