With the victory, UDM improves to 3-4-1 on the season, while the Falcons are now 0-5-0.
The hosts took the lead for good when a crossing ball by Kaitlyn Quarrell was deflected into the net. A BGSU defender, redshirt junior Kylie Briem, was with Quarrell step for step as she moved down the right side of the pitch. Quarrell hit a cross, and Briem deflected the ball with a lunging effort. The ball, however, caromed toward the goal.
BG redshirt freshman goalkeeper Lauren Cadel had started off of her line in anticipation of breaking up the play. After the deflection, she attempted to quickly change direction and scramble back into the goalmouth. Cadel got a piece of the cross/shot, but was unable to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
At the other end of the pitch, the Falcons had several chances, but only one first-half shot. Just over six minutes in, Briem nearly found sophomore Emma Norris behind the Detroit defense with a through ball, but the assistant referee's flag was raise, indicating offside against the Brown and Orange.
Briem and Norris again looked to connect on a pass as the match approached its 18th minute. From the left side, Briem played a short pass to Norris. Norris fired the ball toward goal, but rushed her first-time effort just a bit, and the ball caromed off of a BG teammate and out of bounds for a UDM goal kick.
Less than a minute later, however, the Falcons had stolen the ball back. Senior Kaitlyn Tobin took the ball down the left side and won a corner kick. Classmate Madeline Wideman took that corner, playing the ball into the penalty area, but UDM 'keeper Martha Dunbar was able to slap the ball out of the box.
Cadel made a total of eight saves in the match, with four stops in each half. Just over 10 minutes into Tuesday's match, she stopped a header by Haley Burtraw. After a BG foul outside the box, a UDM free kick sailed into the box, where Burtraw headed it toward goal. Cadel, however, made a leaping effort to grab the ball just below the crossbar.
Nearly 25 minutes in, Tobin's through ball nearly found the boot of sophomore Haley Parkinson. But, the ball rolled just slightly out of Parkinson's reach on the artificial turf, and a UDM backliner beat the BG soph to the ball.
With a half hour gone, Cadel made a spectacular diving stop on a turnaround shot by Anna Mindling, and the BG goalie made another save moments later. Mindling had another grade-A scoring chance before the end of the half, but shot wide of goal, and the Titans took a 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second period, the Falcons had several early chances. With less than three minutes gone, Wideman and freshman Taylor Bucaro worked a give and go. Wideman took Bucaro's return pass and crossed the ball into the penalty area from the right side. A defender got a foot on the ball, but it went toward fifth-year senior Jenny Fowler. The co-captain hit a hard shot that went just wide.
In the 51st minute, Wideman collected a deflected ball and hit a low shot that skimmed just wide of the far post. Moments later, a volley by Tobin went just outside that same left goalpost. Soon after, a through ball by Wideman was just inches out of the reach of Bucaro.
At the other end of the pitch, some solid work by the Falcon defenders broke up what looked to be a solid scoring chance for the Titans. Quarrell brought the ball into the left side of the penalty box, but two Falcons teamed up to quell the threat. The best Quarrell could do was slide a harmless ball toward goal, where Cadel scooped it up.
With just over an hour gone, however, the Titans doubled the lead. Alyssa Lotito's cross found the head of Jennifer Borawski, who drilled a shot toward goal. Cadel had no chance on the play, and the home team had a 2-0 lead.
Midway through the period, Cadel made a nifty leaping effort to keep a long shot out of the goal. The hard, curving effort seemed ticketed toward the upper portion of the goal, but the BG 'keeper was able to tip the ball over the crossbar.
Soon after, the Falcons took the ball the other way. Freshman Sabrina Cisneros crossed the ball in the direction of classmate Haley Malaczewski. Malaczewski got a body part on the ball, but her shot went wide.
Detroit missed a great chance to increase the lead, when a Titan striker drew Cadel toward her and slid a pass to the wide-open Quarrell. Quarrell, with nothing but open net in front of her, fired her shot high over the bar.
BG just missed connections on several chances in the next few minutes. Bucaro found Malaczewski with a pass, but Malaczewski was unable to work free from several defenders near the 18-yard line. Bucaro then eluded a would-be defender in time to play a right-side cross toward goal, but nothing came of it.
Then, Tobin made a run past two UDM players, but her pass was just beyond the reach of senior Ivi Casagrande on the left flank.
With just under 10 minutes to go, Abby McCollum gave the hosts some insurance. A long free kick by Heather Brown was blocked by a BG defender. But, the ball fell directly into the path of the open McCollum at the top of the box. She had plenty of time to settle the ball and fire it into the net for the final 3-0 margin.
Cadel made several more saves in the game's final minutes, including another diving stop in the 90th minute of play, but BG could not cut into the UDM lead before the final horn sounded.
BGSU will be back in action Sunday (Sept. 22), returning home to face the University of Evansville. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m., and the Falcons will be signing autographs and conducting a youth clinic after the game. Admission to the match, the autograph session and the clinic is free.
