Conference office releases coaches poll Wednesday
MAC Office Release
The Falcons garnered 41 points in the poll, which is the result of voting by the league's head coaches. Miami was predicted to capture both the regular-season title and the MAC Tournament championship. The RedHawks received 68 points and five of the eight first-place votes cast.
Eastern Michigan was picked to finish second with 54 points, followed by Western Michigan (50) and Ball State (44). Both the Falcons and Akron received 41 points, with Buffalo getting 34 points, Toledo 19 and Northern Illinois 9.
Last season, the Falcons tied for second in the MAC regular-season standings with a 5-3 overall record, and the Brown and Orange earned the second seed for the MAC Championships. BGSU downed UA in the semifinal round to advance to the championship match for the first time in program history. MU got past the Falcons with a narrow 4-3 win in that championship match.
The Falcons lost four seniors from last year's team. Head coach Penny Dean's four returning players for 2014 include seniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland and sophomores Katie Brozovich and Drew Fillis. They are joined by freshmen Hannah Drayton, Harley Hutchison and Brittany Plaszewski on the 2013-14 roster.
BGSU opens the dual-match portion of the schedule this weekend, hosting Youngstown State University at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. That match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. The Falcons' MAC opener is March 22, when the Brown and Orange will host Western Michigan. The MAC Championships will be held just over a month later (April 25-27) in Oxford, Ohio.
