BGSU looks for 2-0 start in dual-match play

Dean and the Falcons are coming off a 6-1 win over Youngstown State University Sunday (Jan. 26) at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. Five BGSU players won at both singles and doubles, with four of those five capturing singles matches in straight sets. The group of double winners included seniors Nikki Chiricosta and Emily Reuland, sophomore Katie Brozovich and freshmen Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison. All seven BGSU team members won at least one match on the day.
The seniors, Chiricosta and Reuland, lead the Falcons with 21 and 17 total victories, respectively. Both players are 9-6 in singles play in 2013-14, while Chiricosta has a BG-best 12-4 doubles mark. Reuland is 8-7 in doubles action this season.
Brozovich is third on the team with 15 total wins, including a 9-4 doubles mark, while fellow sophomore Drew Fillis has 12 victories this year to date.
The seniors are moving up the BGSU career wins lists, as both players rank among the top 10 on all three school charts.
Chiricosta enters the Duquesne match with 86 singles wins and 170 total wins as a Falcon, ranking second on both school lists. She is just three singles victories and eight overall wins away from tying the school records, both of which are held by her sister, Christine. Nikki Chiricosta also has 84 doubles wins, and is tied for third on that BG list.
Reuland is now tied for fifth on the doubles wins chart, with 74 as a Falcon. She also ranks fifth in school history with 151 total career wins, and she is tied for sixth on the singles wins list, with 77.
Duquesne is 0-1 on the young season. The Dukes suffered a 5-2 loss to Toledo last weekend (Jan. 24) at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee. DU hosts St. Bonaventure on Friday (Jan. 31) before meeting the Falcons the following day.
The Falcons hold a 7-0 lead over Duquesne in the all-time series between the teams. Last year, BGSU posted a 7-0 win over DU at the Perrysburg Tennis Center last season in the dual-match home opener (Jan. 19, 2013). Two seasons ago, in the Falcons' last trip to Western Pennsylvania, BG picked up a 5-2 win (Jan. 21, 2012). The teams have crossed paths once this season already, as the Dukes came to Northwest Ohio to participate in the BGSU Invitational in September.
Following the Duquesne match, the Falcons will return to the road next weekend, heading to East Lansing, Mich., to face Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 8, in another 10:00 a.m. start. The next day -- Sunday, Feb. 9 -- the Falcons will host UIC in a 9:30 a.m. match at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
