Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University and the Central Michigan University women's soccer teams played to a scoreless draw for the first 103 minutes of play, until a chip shot from the Chippewas in the 104th minute sneaked over the head of a charging Lauren Cadel to give the visitors in maroon a 1-0 double overtime win over the Falcons on Friday night at Cochrane Stadium.
"I am really proud of the fact though that two games back-to-back we've put a solid performance together and I think last year that we wouldn't have been in this game," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "We were under fire quite a bit, but we managed it well and I think in the attack, our ability to break lines and transition, and definitely have fun again in the attacking third of the field even, though we didn't score, is just part of the process in putting minutes together, but also putting areas of the field together."
The loss drops BGSU to 2-10-0 overall and 1-4-0 in the MAC, while with the win CMU improves to 3-9-0 and 1-4-0 in conference play.
The early minutes of the contest saw both teams put shots on frame early, as BGSU's Skylar Fleak put a shot online in the second minute of play, while Cadel registered an early save on a Laura Gosse shot in the fourth minute to keep the match scoreless.
Fleak recorded a second shot just minutes later, which sailed wide of the goal from just inside the top of the box, while fellow freshman Madison Schupbach looked to put the home team in front early with a shot attempt in the seventh minute only to see it fly wide of the net.
Bowling Green's Cadel would make another stop on a ball that rolled to her in the ninth minute off the foot of Gosse from within a very crowded box, as the Falcons defensive backline refused to allow the MAC leading goal scorer to get a good look at the goal.
After freshman Leah Runkle had a sliding shot attempt close in on the right front post halted by CMU goalkeeper Heather Laeuffer in the 14th minute of play, the next five shots came by way of Fleak in the 17th minute, Fleak again in the 21st minute, Sidney Huth in the 31st minute, Runkle once more in the 32nd minute, and Sarah Quimby in the 37th minute, as BGSU continued to put pressure on the Chippewas' defense.
Central Michigan all but put the first goal of the game on the scoreboard in the 39th minute, as Jennifer Gassman played a corner into the box where fellow teammate Taylor Potts got her head on it and sent the ball toward the left front post. Cadel was blocked on the play, yet a BGSU defender standing just inside the front left post cleared the header out to keep the Chippewas off the scoreboard with a huge team save.
Yet the Falcons would get another vital save minutes later, as in the 41st minute Gassman got a breakaway along the left side of the box and found herself 1-v-1 with Cadel. However, the redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper was able to get a hand on the shot attempt to force it back toward the middle of the box where the loose ball was cleared by a Falcon defender to keep the match scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play.
Perhaps the Falcons' best scoring chances came early in the second half, as in the 55th minute sophomore midfielder Kara Ross was open just outside of the top of the box yet sent a shot wide right of the goal, while in the 63rd minute fellow newcomer Elisa Baeron saw her open shot attempt from the top left corner of the box go across the goal and out of play wide right.
The next 15 minutes saw the Chippewas outshot the Falcons 5-1, as Cadel made not one but two saves during that time to keep the match knotted up at 0-0.
BGSU's last scoring chance of regulation came in the 79th minute, as Jennifer Reyes got a strong leg behind a bouncing ball in the box to put a laser toward the goal where Laeuffer made a save above her head to keep the Falcons off the scoreboard.
Saves from Cadel in the 86th minute and in the 88th minute, which included a last second leaping punch out of the ball just over the cross bar, sent the game into overtime tied at 0-0.
The defenses' would shine in the first overtime period, as Cadel recorded a save in the 96th minute on a Gassman attempt, while the Falcons' defense would block two more shots during the frame to keep the Chippewas from finding the golden goal.
However, the Chippewas' defense was also up for the challenge, as CMU blocked not one, but two shot attempts from Fleak in the 99th minute to send the game into a second overtime period.
After fighting off two corner kicks into the box in the 102nd and 103rd minutes, including a shot on goal which was stopped by Cadel on the latter corner, the BGSU defense, which had played tough all night long, allowed the Chippewas' Kaelyn Korte to play a ball over the backline in the 104th minute where Gassman chased the ball down, beat a charging Cadel to the loose ball and chipped it just over the heads of the sliding Cadel and watch it roll into the open goal for the game-winning goal.
"I was really proud of our defensive discipline and I thought we had pretty tight coverage. She (Laura Gosse) did get some quality chances off, but every opportunity she had she definitely wasn't getting a clean look," continued Basalyga. "So I think our discipline defensively both with our backline and the pressure we were putting on their forwards from behind the ball with our midfields was pretty sharp and clean today."
Cadel tallied a season-high 11 saves for the Falcons in 104 minutes of play in goal.
BGSU was outshot only 21-15 for the match, yet the Chippewas put 13 shots on goal compared to the Falcons four on frame for the 104 minute contest.
CMU also held an 8-3 advantage in fouls and an 8-1 lead in corner kicks on the night.
Bowling Green will host Toledo in an "Orange Out" on Sunday, Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.
