Bowling Green, Ohio – For the second straight game and the third time this season, redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Cadel registered double digit saves in a contest for the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, recording a career-high 13 saves in the Falcons' 1-0 loss to Toledo on Sunday afternoon at Cochrane Stadium.
"I honestly saw a lot of grit, a lot of focus, a lot of hard work through 90 minutes of soccer," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "I thought we defended really, really well and shutdown a few of their key players from obviously scoring early in the match. I think we grinded that game out."
The career-high 13 saves for Cadel gives her a career mark of nine games with double digit saves over her two seasons in goal for the Falcons, which is tied with Erika Flanders for the most career games with double digit saves by a goalkeeper in BGSU women's soccer history.
"I saw more shots than usual, but they were from farther out. So even though I was facing more shots, they weren't around or in the box," stated Cadel. "My backline was telling me to prepare for shots, so I was ready for them. I think our backline has been very disciplined in the last three games, this game included. We've worked really hard and I think it has definitely shown."
Bowling Green looked to be the aggressor at the very start of the match, as freshman midfielder Madison Schupbach blasted a shot from 25 yards out that was blocked by a Rocket defender in the seventh minute of the opening half.
Following Toledo's first shot attempt by way of Hannah Scafaria in the 11th minute, which was stopped by Cadel, BGSU's Schupbach ripped another shot from just outside the top of the box in the 14th minute only to see it blocked again by a defender in white.
The rest of the first half saw the Falcons on the defense, as Toledo outshot the home team in orange 7-1 over the final 30 minutes of the opening half.
The Rockets nearly took the lead on two different occasions over the next 10 minutes. In the 17th minute a header from Isabella Echeverri, off a well-placed corner kick into the box, flew just over the cross bar, while just minutes later Geri Siudzinski's shot in front of the goal off a loose ball was hauled in by Cadel in the 22nd minute.
After a Toledo shot attempt missed wide right in the 24th minute, BGSU tried to counter with an offensive attack of its own that saw Skylar Fleak line a shot from the top left corner of the box in the 25th minute that forced UT goalkeeper Sam Tiongson to make a diving stop at the front left post on the play.
UT put a header off a cross wide of the frame in the 30th minute and had not one, but two great scoring chances halted at the goal line in the 33rd minute by back-to-back diving stops from BGSU's Cadel. On the play, Toledo's Kiersten Johnson was able to drive past the BGSU defensive line and take a shot from close in on the left side of the box. Cadel made a diving stop that sent the ball back into the box where UT's Angelica Hernandez then fired a shot toward the goal, only to see Cadel hop up and make a second straight diving save to keep the match scoreless.
Possession for much of the second half was controlled by the Rockets, as Toledo opened up the half with a shot from Scafaria that rolled into the waiting arms of Cadel in the 49th minute.
BGSU's Fleak, who was able to get free from the defense just two minutes later in the 51st minute, tracked down a clear out from the Toledo backline and drove a shot from the top left corner of the box that flew high of the goal and out of play.
The Falcons' next shot would not come until 15 minutes later, as Toledo continued to force the issue on the Bowling Green defense with seven straight shots - three of those being stopped by Cadel in goal, one being blocked by the BGSU defense and the other three soaring off target.
Not deterred, the Falcons continued to search for their attack, as BGSU's Sarah Quimby looked to get a quick goal over the head of Tiongson in the 66th minute by sending a shot from close to 30 yards out toward the net only to see it fly offline and over the frame.
An offensive onslaught by the Rockets over an eight minute span, which bolstered eight shot attempts, opened up in the 69th minute with a shot off the front right post from Chiara Paradiso and comprised of four more shots halted by BGSU's Cadel, before a Bethany Thomas header in front of the right post off a loose ball in the box from a corner kick snuck just inside the right side of the net in the 77th minute to put the Rockets up 1-0.
Bowling Green would not register a shot attempt for the rest of the match, but had a long ball over top of the defense in the closing seconds nearly find an open Fleak streaking towards the goal before it was corralled by Toledo's Tiongson just before the final horn sounded.
Fleak and Schupbach each posted two shots apiece to lead the Falcons, while Quimby's second half shot rounded out the five shots on the day for BGSU.
BGSU was outshot 28-5 for the match, as the Falcons were unable to sustain a strong offensive attack for much of the contest.
The Rockets, who were the aggressor for most of the game, also held a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.
The loss drops BGSU to 2-11-0 overall and 1-5-0 in league play, while Toledo improves to 5-8-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the MAC with the road win.
The Falcons will remain at home next weekend when the Ohio Bobcats come to town for a MAC East contest on Friday night, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium.
