It was 50 years ago that both the Falcon Club and Athletics Hall of Fame were started at BGSU. Those two entities, along with the Heritage Sports that are no longer fielded by the University, will be recognized during the weekend, which includes a home football game with Western Michigan.
"BGSU Athletics plays a crucial role in the success of our institution," said BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey. "From the spirit of the Falcon Family to our competition in the national arena, the support for our student-athletes and coaches binds our alumni to Bowling Green in a way that few other opportunities can. This year's Legacy Weekend will honor our memorable past as we work to create the future for Falcon Athletics."
Â
Assistant AD for Development Jane Myers observed that the reunion held by the men's and women's lacrosse programs last fall helped set the stage for the Legacy Weekend. Notably, both men's and women's lacrosse are Heritage Sports at BGSU.
"It was just so positive to see them reconnecting," Myers said about the lacrosse reunion. "And with the Falcon Club and Hall of Fame each having its 50th anniversary, we started brainstorming and came up with the idea to do it all at once."
Because the Heritage Sports are such an important part of BGSU Athletics' history and have not received much attention in recent years, those nine sports have been added to the celebration. Be sure to read about these key sports starting on page 12.
Among the activities planned are campus bus tours, a golfing opportunity, a social event at the Stroh Center on Friday night, a tour of the Cochrane Cunningham Archive and Museum at the Stroh Center, a pregame tailgate before the Western Michigan football game, and recognition of former athletes during the game. Dr. Mazey will host a reception for Hall of Fame members at the University House, with Paul Miles — the only Falcon Football player to have his number retired — providing music at the reception.
Tom Glick, who was the public address announcer for countless football and basketball games, will return as well as Jim Hof, who helped get the Falcon Club started, and April Harris, the widow of Jim Harris, who was the first director of the Falcon Club.
"It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Myers said. "We are looking forward to seeing BGSU alumni return to campus, reconnect and help us honor our past."
