Orange Sweeps Brown In Annual Fall World Series
October 22, 2014 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—In a series that was riddled with rain delays, the Orange team came away with a three-game sweep of the Brown team in the annual Orange and Brown World Series. Several players stood out during the series, which began on Oct. 14.
"The fall is a time that we get to evaluate a lot of players, and the world series puts all of our guys into competitive situations," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "Our team has taken advantage of our time in the fall, and that will definitely help in preparations for the spring."
In game one of the series, the Orange team completed an improbably comeback, overcoming a last-inning deficit for a 6-3 victory. Game two went to the Orange team 4-1 and the third game was an 8-0 rout.
"I was excited to see how well our team competed and performed," Orange team coach Ryan Shay started. "It's always nice to see the work that the players put in during the fall pay off for the world series."
Shay is now 6-0 during his career (player and coach) in the Orange and Brown World Series.
Andrew Lacinak led the way for the Orange team on the mound, pitching 7.0 innings in the series. He recorded a win and a save in the series. A redshirt sophomore, Lacinak struck out four while allowing just two hits and one run.
Trevor Blaylock was also strong on the mound for the Orange team, picking up a win in 5.0 innings pitched. He struck out five while allowing just three hits.
In game two of the series, freshman Zac Carey picked up the win while sophomore Tony Landi registered the save.
Five players on the Orange team recorded at least three hits in the series, led by Jesse Rait's six hits. Rait was on base seven times in the series. Matt Smith (5 hits, 3B), Brian Bien (4 hits), Hunter Clanin (3 hits, 3 BB), and Tyler Greiner (3 hits) were the other players to lead the way to an Orange team sweep.
The pitching staff of the Orange team kept the Brown team at bay for much of the series.
"Our team battled throughout the entire series, but just couldn't come through to win a game," Brown team coach Garrett Gray stated. "Despite the loss, the fall world series will help towards our development and improvement for this season."
Trey Keegan and Randy Righter both had multiple hits for the Brown team.
The Falcons will conclude their fall schedule with two more intrasquad scrimmages this week. The Orange and Brown are scheduled to play on both Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 3:15 pm.
