Falcons Break Program’s Single-Season Strikeout Record For Third Straight Year
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team kicked off the weekend series against Western Michigan with a 5-2 win Friday night (May 8) at Steller Field. The Falcons were paced by an elite night on the mound from Ethan Stade. Going 7.2 innings with 118 pitches, Stade struck out a career-high 15 batters while giving up just four hits, no walks and two runs with only one earned. Stade handed the ball off to Ty Roder who chipped in two more strikeouts to give the Falcons 17 in the contest, just four shy of the program record. As for the offense, a three-run home run in the fourth from Sam Seidel accounted for more than half the runs with BGSU adding a tally in both the first and fifth as well for the eventual final. The Falcons and Broncos will continue the series on Saturday (May 9) with a 3 p.m. first pitch following BGSU's Senior Day and Commencement recognitions.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Sam Seidel drew a lead off walk and then stole second base, setting up an RBI single off the bat of Anthony Mitta on a liner up the middle into center field.
- In the top of the fourth, Western Michigan tallied their first hit with a double. The runner attempted to move up later in the inning on a fly ball to right, but a laser of a throw from Zack Horky got the runner at third for a double play.
- Bowling Green added to their total in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Griffin Scheiderer and Vinny Salvione both singled with Scheiderer's getting through the left side and Salvione's being an infield dribbler past the pitcher. The pair of base knocks set up a three-run home run off the bat of Seidel with a strong blast to right for a 4-0 lead.
- WMU responded in the top of the fifth with a leadoff home run for a 4-1 score.
- The scoring continued in the bottom of the fifth with BGSU answering. Andrew DiLodovico crushed a leadoff double that carried to the left center wall on the fly. After an out was recorded, Horky traded places with him by lining a double down the third base line to score DiLodovico for a 5-1 advantage.
- Western Michigan added an unearned run in the top of the eighth for a 5-2 score.

FALCON STAT FACTS
- As a team, the Falcons tallied 17 strikeouts in the game, giving BGSU 437 Ks on the season, breaking the team's single-season strikeouts record for the third straight year after registering 431 last year and 403 in 2024. Prior to 2024, the record had stood since 1999 with 368.
- Ethan Stade tallied a career-high 15 strikeouts for the Falcons over 7.2 innings of work without allowing a walk. The outing for Stade gives him 96 strikeouts on the season, propelling him up to third in program history with the record set at 120 by Doug Bair in 1971. For the second time this season, Stade has registered the most strikeouts by a Falcon in at least 25 years based on available game-by-game records. Stade now has four games this season with double-digit strikeouts and has registered six or more in eight straight starts.
- Ty Roder followed Stade on the mound and was just as effective, logging two strikeouts over his five batters faced and 1.1 innings of work. Over his last four appearances, Roder has allowed just one run across 8.0 innings while striking out eight and walking only one. During that span he has a 1-0 record and a save while lowering his season ERA to 4.83.
- Sam Seidel belted a three-run home run in the fourth inning for the Falcons, giving him a team-leading seven home runs on the season. Seidel added three RBI for his first multi-RBI game since April 24 and two runs for his first multi-run game since April 7.
- Seidel added a walk drawn and a stolen base in the game as well, giving him 101 walks and 52 stolen bases for his BGSU career. Both moved him up the BGSU career lists, up to ninth all-time in walks, matching Jamie Reiser, and seventh in stolen bases, tying Chuck Black.
- Griffin Scheiderer ripped a single through the left side of the infield in the bottom of the fourth, extending his on-base streak to a team-leading 14 games.
- Zack Horky continued a strong stretch at the plate. Over the last three games, Horky is hitting .500 with five hits, three walks drawn, three RBI, two runs scored and a double.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Andrew DiLodovico was hit by a pitch, his 12th HBP of the season. The mark ties DiLodovico for eighth on BGSU's single-season hit-by-pitch list with Kurt Wells' 2007 campaign.
