Kalamazoo, Michigan – The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team had its two-game winning streak snapped on Friday afternoon, as the Falcons surrendered two second half goals in a 2-0 MAC road loss at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Broncos scored in the 56th and 86th minutes to defeat the Falcons 2-0 at the WMU Soccer Complex.
For the fifth straight game redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Cadel posted double digit saves, as she totaled 12 stops against the Broncos on Friday afternoon.
"Western Michigan is simply a better team than us. With that being said, we absorbed a lot of pressure and defended with a lot of grit and discipline in the first half to head into halftime 0-0," commented head coach Lindsay Basalyga. "Lauren (Cadel) had yet another outstanding performance and kept us in the game longer than we should have been in the second half. Our team's fight and energy throughout the entire 90 minutes is a testament to our character and where we are in our process seeing that we lost to this team 5-0 last year at home."
The loss drops BGSU to 4-12-0 overall and 3-6-0 in conference play, while Western Michigan improves to 10-6-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the MAC with the win.
Both teams came off the first touch looking to score, as the home standing Broncos opened up with a shot from Emma Kahn in the second minute, while BGSU's Madison Schupbach responded with a shot for the visiting Falcons in the fifth minute. However, both goalkeepers made stops on the opening shots to keep the match scoreless early.
Following a 15 minute segment that saw Western Michigan tally seven straight shots, four of which were on target and stopped by either Cadel or by a BGSU defender, the Falcons' Elisa Baeron put a shot just wide of the goal in the 28th minute as the Orange and Brown continued to look to get on the scoreboard first midway through the opening half.
However, the rest of the first half would see the Broncos control possession of the ball, as Cadel made stops in the 32nd, 36th, and the 38th minutes in goal for BGSU on shots from Western Michigan's Gina Maddi, Irene Young and Aubrey Sudomier to keep the Falcons and Broncos tied at 0-0.
The BGSU defense blocked a shot in the 40th minute, and then saw a shot sail wide of the post in the 42nd minute, before Cadel registered another save in the closing seconds of the first half on yet another Bronco scoring chance to send the match to the halftime break tied at 0-0.
The pressure from the WMU attack continued in the second half, as Broncos opened up the half with a shot from Kylie Nylen in the 48th minute, which was halted by Cadel in goal, and a second shot by Sudomier just two minutes later in the 50th minute that was blocked by a Falcon defender.
Yet the Broncos would finally break through the BGSU defense and Cadel in the 56th minute when Young received a pass from Sudomier inside the middle of the box and poked the ball into the goal to put the home team on top 1-0 with 34 minutes to go in regulation.
Down 1-0, the Falcons were unable to put together an offensive attack, as Western Michigan forced Cadel to make saves in the 66th, 70th and 82nd minutes, as the Broncos continued to put pressure on the defense of BGSU.
Western Michigan added an insurance goal in the 86th minute on a goal from Ariana Donahue in the lower left corner of the net to put the score at 2-0, where it would stand when the final horn sounded.
The Falcons were outshot 26-2 on the day, while the Broncos also held the advantage in shots on goal (16-1) and corner kicks (9-1).
BGSU's lone two shot attempts came from Schupbach and Baeron in the first half of play.
"This game made us a better team and we'll move on quickly to prepare for our Sunday game versus NIU," concluded Coach Basalyga.
Bowling Green will return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 26, at Northern Illinois at 2 p.m. eastern time in DeKalb, Illinois.
