Indianapolis, Ind. – The NCAA today released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program and Bowling Green remains ahead of the curve nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. Sixteen of BGSU's 18 teams had a GSR equal to or better than the national average of 84 percent and the department's 86 percent GSR was third among all MAC schools.
Five of Bowling Green's teams have a perfect 100 percent GSR, up from four a year ago, and another five are at least at 90 percent. Men's cross country, hockey, golf, tennis and volleyball all ranked with a perfect graduation success rate, while women's soccer (95 percent), swimming/diving (94 percent), women's basketball (93 percent), gymnastics (92 percent) and baseball (90 percent) all posted exemplary marks.
"It has been another remarkable year in the classroom for the Falcons," BGSU Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Academics Lesley Irvine said. "We are so proud of the tradition of academic achievement that has come to define our athletic programs here at BGSU. We have been able to improve our overall graduation rate, pointing to continued improvement on an already very high standard consistently achieved by our student-athlete body. We are also very proud to be above the national average for GSR, therefore elevating our identity as a Division I program that values and supports the academic progress and goals of all of our student-athletes."
Sixteen of the Falcons' 18 sports ranked among the top half in the conference in their respective sport, with each of the five sports with a perfect GSR placing first or tied for first in the league. Baseball, men's soccer and women's basketball were each second in the conference, as football, men's golf, gymnastics, women's soccer, and swim/dive were fourth. Women's cross country/track and field tied for fifth among MAC schools.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes and it takes into account the many different academic paths followed by today's college students. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport.
The GSR data released by the NCAA today is based on the four entering freshmen classes in Division I from 2004-05 through 2007-08 and measures graduation within a six-year time frame.
