Cedarville, Ohio --The Bowling Green State University men's cross country team competed at the All-Ohio Championship meet Friday afternoon. The Falcons finished 22nd out of 43 teams in the 8,000-meter race. Five freshmen were among the top seven for the Orange and Brown.
Â
Freshman Kohl Taberner finished first on the team (100/569 overall) with a time of 26:30.02 in his first 8K with BGSU.
"I thought today was a breakout performace for me," Taberner said. "It was my first ever 8K and I went much faster than my expectations. I'm looking to keep dropping time throughout the season and by MACs I hope to be under 26 minutes."
Â
Placing second on the team, redshirt freshman Travis Jex ran a personal best 27:09.07, which broke his old record by nearly 30 seconds. Senior Greg Black placed third and redshirt freshman Nathan Kuck also set a personal record, finishing fourth on the team. Freshman Nick Voth, along with junior Jeremy Richard rounded out the top seven for BGSU.
Â
"Individually, Kohl stepped up as a true freshman in his first 8K to lead our group wit ha strong start to his career," men's assistant coach Eric Thatcher said. "Our guys learned quite a bit today about how large college meets are raced. I liked the way we found each other and worked together. We will look forward to applying the lessons learned to help our group continue to take steps in the right direction."
Â
Overall, the Falcons had six runners set new personal best times.
Â
On the women's side, Lindsay Kaatz ran in the 6,000-meter championship race and finished with a personal best time of 24:18.38. That time broke her previous record by over a minute, which was set at All-Ohios last season.
