Bowling Green, Ohio – With all the festivities and events happening this weekend at Bowling Green State University as part of the 2014 Homecoming Weekend, what was not lost was the first days of official practice for the men's basketball team and new Falcons' head coach Chris Jans.
"Well I think anytime you get to the point of the school year where it is the first day of official practice everybody's excited. Obviously it is new beginnings for us with our staff being in their first season with the program," stated Coach Jans. "You know the first practice is different than it used to be with the loosening of the rules and having the ability to be on the floor with your guys in the summer and then in the fall within the time limits that the NCAA gives you. So the first practice isn't quite the same as it used to be, but it is still a monumental day in our season."
The Falcons took to the practice floor on Saturday morning around 10 a.m. with a roster of 16 players comprised up of 11 returners and five newcomers.
Bowling Green returns four starters from last season in Richaun Holmes, Jehvon Clarke, Anthony Henderson and Spencer Parker, who all averaged double digit points last season for the Falcons, as well as upperclassmen senior Damarkeo Lyshe, redshirt-junior Josh Gomez and junior Brandon Busuttil.
Sophomore guards JD Tisdale and Zack Denny both return for their second seasons at BGSU in 2014-15, while both redshirt-junior Chauncey Orr, who received a medical-redshirt, and redshirt-freshman Garrett Mayleben return after sitting out last season.
Five new faces sported BGSU practice gear this weekend in junior transfers Delvin Dickerson, David Joseph and Jovan Austin, as well as two new freshmen in Rasheed Worrell and Matt Fox.
BGSU will open up its 2014-15 season on Friday, Nov. 7, in an exhibition contest versus Notre Dame College at 4:30 p.m. as part of an exhibition doubleheader with the women's basketball team.
