October 09, 2014 | Women's Cross Country
Bowling Green, Ohio -- Over the course of the season, BGSU Athletic Communications will introduce three freshmen runners from the women's cross country team and three from the men's team. The second of this three-part segment will spotlight Elena Lancioni.
Â
A freshman from La Porte, Ind., Lancioni earned eight varsity letters while at La Porte High School. She is a three-time cross country all-state performer, including a third-place finish in 2013 and 16th place in 2012. Lancioni's team won the Duneland Athletic Conference title and placed 10th at the IHSAA state meet in 2013.
Â
This season for the Falcons, Lancioni has competed in all three meets. She raced unattached in her first two and was in uniform for the Lousiville Cross Country Classic. At the Toledo Invite, she placed fifth on the squad with a 5K time of 18:39.2 in her first collegiate race. She raced a personal best time of 18:28.72 at the team's only home meet of the season, the Mel Brodt. Lancioni finished in seventh place on the team at Louisville, running an 18:38.20. While at Bowling Green, she plans to study exercise science.

Â
Difficulties you have had to overcome in your career:
I've been fortunate to not have any injuries during my career, but when I first came in as a freshman in high school I had to learn how to challenge myself on my team. It is not easy to run everyday on your own and be driven. I learned through high school how to believe in myself and never give up. I was lucky to have such wonderful people in my life who supported me like my parents, coaches, teammates, and friends.
Â
Any superstitions before a race:
I triple knot my race shoes.
Â
What do you like most about Bowling Green:
I enjoy the historic downtown feel and the friendly people.
Â
Favorite memory with the team so far:
On our trip down to Louisville, Kentucky for our race, we played a game in the van. We had to name famous people and we kept the game going for two hours. It helped the time go by faster.

To qualify for the NCAA Championships
