TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University football team was defeated by the University of Toledo, 27-20, Wednesday (Nov. 19) night at the Glass Bowl. Bowling Green falls to 7-4 (5-2 MAC) with the loss, while Toledo improves to 7-4 (6-1 MAC).
"I'm very disappointed for the seniors," head coach Dino Babers said of his senior class that is winless against Toledo. "That's a really good football team we just played and coach Campbell is a good coach. I really hope that they have an opportunity to win that side of the division – I really would like to give our seniors another chance against them [at the MAC Championship Game]."
True freshman quarterback Cody Callaway led a game-tying touchdown drive with 13:17 remaining in the contest on his first drive of the game by connecting with Ronnie Moore on a 17-yard pass, but Toledo's Dwight Macon rushed for a seven-yard score on the ensuing drive for what stood as the game-winning touchdown.
"There's no controversy – James Knapke is our starting quarterback and will start the Ball State game," Babers said of the fourth-quarter switch to Callaway. "But for this game on this night, I was trying to do anything I could to give the seniors an opportunity to win a game against their rival. It was a tough call, but it was a call that needed to be made."
Callaway threw for 116 yards and a score on 5-of-13 passing, while Knapke completed seven passes for 71 yards. Moore led the Falcon offense with 64 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, and also hauled in three receptions for 46 yards and a score. Andre Givens contributed to the running game with 55 yards on 19 touches. Gehrig Dieter caught five passes for 88 yards to aid the Bowling Green passing game.
As a defense, Bowling Green forced three turnovers. True freshmen defensive backs Nick Johnson and Clint Stephens intercepted a pass apiece, while defensive lineman Gus Schwieterman recovered a fumble. Linebacker Gabe Martin registered 12 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Defensive back Brian Sutton contributed with nine tackles and one tackle for loss, and fellow defensive back Ryland Ward chipped in with eight tackles of his own.
Bowling Green battled back from two separate 10-point deficits, but could never take the lead. After Toledo's Kareem Hunt – who rushed for 265 yards on 30 carries – ran for a 91-yard touchdown in the third quarter, the Orange and Brown countered with a Tyler Tate 31-yard field goal – his second of the night – and the Callaway to Moore touchdown to knot the game at 20-20. Macon's touchdown rush with 10:45 remaining in the ballgame was too much for the Falcons to overcome.
"He's a really good running back," Babers said of Hunt. "He goes 91 yards on us and we can't run him down. He has fabulous speed, good balance and can go the duration. He's an excellent running back."
After failing on fourth-and-11 late in the fourth quarter, the Bowling Green defense stood tall to force a three-and-out to give the offense a chance. But needing to drive 77 yards with only 1:29 on the clock and no timeouts was going to be a tall task. Callaway found Dieter for an 11-yard completion on the first play of the drive, but a sack, and three straight Callaway incompletions turned the ball back over to the Rockets. Toledo ran out the clock from there.
"We did everything we could tonight," Moore said. "I did everything I could tonight to try to get us a win. I knew coming into the game that I was going to be a big part of the offense, and I wanted to contribute. In the end, we didn't do enough, and it hurts."
Toledo struck first in the contest, as Hunt rushed for a two-yard score in the first quarter, but defensive lineman Taylor Royster blocked the extra point to keep the Falcons' deficit at 6-0. The Orange and Brown bounced right back, however, driving 63 yards over 10 plays before settling for a 23-yard Tate field goal. Moore took a direct snap on third-and-10 and rushed 31 yards down to the Toledo seven-yard line to help set up the score.
Toledo extended its lead to 13-3 following a Macon two-yard touchdown rush. Bowling Green proceeded to go three-and-out, but on Toledo's ensuing drive, Johnson registered his fifth interception of the season at a crucial time in the ballgame.
With the Rockets in BGSU territory, Johnson jumped into the passing lane and picked the ball off at the Bowling Green 34-yard line, and returned it 41 yards. After a personal foul on Toledo, the Falcons set up shop at the Rocket 12 yard-line. Two plays later, Moore found the end zone from 10 yards out off a direct snap, and Bowling Green headed to the locker room for halftime down by a score of 13-10.
The Falcons – who are now 0-3 against MAC West foes -- held Toledo to just 63 passing yards, but were outgained, 388-271, in total offense. The Rockets also owned the time of possession battle, as Toledo held the ball for 34:21.
"It stinks. I haven't beat them since I've been here," said Martin. "I hope we get another chance to be perfectly honestly with you."
Bowling Green will conclude its regular season on Nov. 28 at 1 p.m. at Doyt L. Perry Stadium against Ball State. The Falcons will then prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championship Game on Dec. 5 at Ford Field.
